Manchester United back in the race for Brazilian midfielder following £20m price drop

Manchester United have steamed back into the race for one of their former targets, a Brazilian midfielder, following a £20million drop in his asking price.

Manchester United’s midfield department has been a cause for concern since the beginning of Ruben Amorim’s tenure, and it looks as if a couple of signings may be made in the near future to try to resolve their issues.

United have opted for a midfield pair of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro for much of the 2025/26 campaign, although a recent injury to the former has left United without their captain.

To make matters worse, Kobbie Mainoo, who has been waiting patiently for his chance in the starting XI, has also picked up an injury, which has left the Reds with only Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte at their disposal.

During the summer transfer window, the Reds were often linked with a host of options to fill their midfield void, and it seems as if one of these options has reentered the frame.

United back in Ederson race

As reported by TEAMtalk, United are back in the race for one of their former targets, Ederson, who seems to fit the bill in terms of what Amorim is looking for.

United are looking for somebody who can impact the team straight away, and given Ederson’s age, profile and experience, he could be a viable suitor.

The 26-year-old was rumoured with a move to both Liverpool and FC Barcelona back in December, and it was reported by Football Insider that a £50million fee would secure them a deal.

Less than a month later, TEAMtalk are reporting that Ederson’s asking price could be under £35million, which has reportedly attracted the interest of the Red Devils.

Ederson deal remains difficult

Despite the drop in his asking price, a deal for the Brazilian midfielder may still remain very difficult, especially for United, who are currently without any form of European football.

The report states that Atalanta would be reluctant to lose their star before the end of the season, and on top of this, Ederson would be eager to ensure any future transfer would be to a club with Champions League football for next term.

The Reds sit sixth in the Premier League at the moment, and although a Champions League spot is well within their grasp, it isn’t a certainty, and may repel the Atalanta man from making the move.

Ederson currently sits on a list of midfield targets for the Reds, alongside the likes of Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, Connor Gallagher and Ruben Neves.
