Manchester United are ‘not afraid’ to make shock move for ‘world-class’ star in 2026, he would cost £57m

Manchester United could end up making a shock signing next summer for a ‘world-class’ player who has previously been linked with the club.

Manchester United reinforced Ruben Amorim’s squad with five new senior signings during the recent summer transfer window.

Benjamin Šeško, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha were brought in to strengthen the attack, while Senne Lammens and Diego Leon also arrived to add depth.

Despite spending over £200 million, several weaknesses remain, and United have already begun planning for next summer’s business.

Midfield stands out as the biggest concern after the club failed to resolve long-standing issues in that area in the summer, though other positions are also expected to be addressed in future windows.

United are ‘not afraid’ to make shock move for Kane

The addition of Šeško at Old Trafford will hopefully be successful although there are concerns about having yet another inexperienced striker shoulder the goalscoring burden at United.

When Rasmus Højlund was signed in 2023, United should have brought Harry Kane as well or instead of the Dane but the England all-time goalscorer instead went to Germany and joined Bayern Munich.

Even though the Reds now have Joshua Zirkzee and Šeško on their books, Ben Jacobs has claimed that they are ‘not afraid’ to bring in a top level no.9 next summer and claimed that Kane could be a potential option.

“I think there is,” replied Jacobs when asked by The United Stand whether there is any truth in rumours linking Kane with a potential Old Trafford move.

“I’m not going to get anyone too exciting so early but I can tell you a few factual things: First is that Kane has this release clause that was largely kept a secret and it’s €65 million (£57 million).

“Second of all, after the World Cup, there is a realistic chance that Kane returns (to the Premier League). He’s not going to go to MLS or Saudi. Can he go somewhere and break Alan Shearer’s goalscoring record and that’s really important to Kane – Kane likes the idea of having that personal accolade.

“You may remember when Kane was at Spurs, prior to the Bayern move, Manchester United went to Daniel Levy and were basically told it’s one price for them and another price for a non Premier League rival. So Manchester United never escalated anything, not because they didn’t want Kane, but because Daniel Levy made it near impossible to do business.

“Now that complication is out of it and add to the fact that Ruben Amorim was pushing for Ollie Watkins (before signing Šeško), Man United will not be afraid to add another no.9 in the summer of 2026.”

Kane move feels like it depends on progress

Kane will be 33 years of age next summer although the centre-forward has never relied on pace or power to score goals, and he is still smashing them in at Bayern. He remains a ‘world-class’ goalscorer.

The potential success of that signing feels like it would almost entirely be based on how much progression United can make this season.

If they make positive steps forward and then add some quality in midfield and Kane upfront, it would be a serious attempt at moving towards competing for the big trophies immediately.

But if that progress is not made this season, United might think twice about spending so much on a 33-year-old on big wages when there will be plenty of other ways to try and strengthen the team for the long-term.

Ever since Kane broke through at Tottenham Hotspur, he felt like the exact kind of player Sir Alex Ferguson would have pinched and the move might actually finally happen.
