With deadline day nearing, Manchester United and their young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo have seemingly agreed regarding the chances of a shock transfer.
For Manchester United, the Premier League campaign hasn’t got off to the start many had in mind, with only one point from their first two fixtures.
This solo point came in last weekend’s draw at Fulham, where Ruben Amorim’s side lived to rue their squandered chances. Their only goal came from a deflected Leny Yoro header.
One of the key talking points regarding the United squad at the beginning of this 2025/26 campaign has been their midfield department, and more specifically, Kobbie Mainoo.
Mainoo has been an unused substitute for the Red Devils in both the matches against Arsenal and Fulham, which has called his future at the club into question.
Mainoo and United on a similar same page
With only a week left in the transfer window, many have wondered whether Mainoo could end up making a last-minute move away from his boyhood club.
According to a new report from ESPN, Mainoo has not asked to leave the club, and United do not anticipate parting ways with their 20-year-old midfielder before the transfer deadline, with neither party currently anticipating that they will part ways.
The report states that nothing is being ruled out; however, if a serious offer were to be received, United’s tight financial position may force it to consider its options.
Additionally, with next summer presenting the 2026 World Cup, Mainoo may also need to reassess his position, as he will be eager to feature in Thomas Tuchel’s England plans.
Amorim’s midfield struggle
With Amorim setting his side up in a 3-4-2-1 system, there isn’t much room at all for profiles such as Mainoo or even Bruno Fernandes.
United have signed two number ten’s this summer to operate as their wide attackers, which leaves all of Mason Mount, Mainoo, and Fernandes to compete for one spot in the double-pivot.

So far, it is the United captain who has been prioritised in the midfield, causing Mainoo to be left on the bench, whereas Mount has started both fixtures up front instead of the new striker Benjamin Sesko.
Hopefully, for the sake of the club, Amorim and Mainoo can find a way to coexist, as it would be a shame if United had to sacrifice such a talented player for the sake of a system.
