Manchester United are “almost certain” to face a profit and sustainability loss this summer if they sell two of Rúben Amorim stars, says David Ornstein.
Manchester United are preparing for a significant summer overhaul as they look to support Rúben Amorim’s arrival by raising funds through player sales. A number of departures are expected as the club reshape the squad to match the new manager’s tactical demands.
Victor Lindelöf and Christian Eriksen are both set to leave once their contracts expire at the end of the season. United have no plans to offer new deals, with both players expected to move on.
The club are also planning to part ways with several loanees. Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia are all likely to be sold, with Amorim not viewing them as part of his long-term plans.
Casemiro is another senior name expected to depart as United look to lower the average age of the squad and bring in players more suited to Amorim’s high-intensity style of play.
Huge shift in Onana’s United future
Major news breaking ahead of United’s 4-1 loss against Newcastle on Sunday afternoon was that goalkeeper André Onana had been left out of Amorim’s squad after his error-strung performance against Lyon in midweek.
Speaking with NBC Sports ahead of the game, David Ornstein spoke about the Cameroon international’s future at United amid his poor form, stating that if United were to move the player on in the summer, it would likely be at a profit and sustainability loss.
“It does raise questions about the future of Onana,” Ornstein explained. “He joined for £47.2 million in the summer of 2023, signing a five-year contract with the option of a further 12 months.
“Unless somebody came in with huge money for him, the hopes of United selling him for a profit are almost non-existent, and that would mean a PSR profitability and sustainability loss, which could rule out the possibility of selling him.
“He has switched agents in recent months. That was meant for a new contract or improved terms. He may now have to look at trying to shift his player, and this would not have been expected for Manchester United.”
Højlund’s sale would also be PSR loss
A second player who’s future is now under major consideration is Rasmus Højlund, with the striker failing to impress since Amorim took charge of the club in November 2023.
Ornstein further clarified that if United were to sell Højlund in the summer alongside Onana, he would also represent another likely PSR loss, which would plunge United into further financial uncertainty.
“It wasn’t on the agenda, another new goalkeeper, and that’s a similar situation with the likes of Rasmus Højlund, who many have said could be leaving with United looking to sign a new striker. It wouldn’t have been on the agenda. It would present another PSR loss again, almost certainly.”
Højlund has been linked with multiple Serie A clubs this month, with Fabrizio Romano claiming that both Juventus and Napoli have called United to understand his availability.
According to various reports, United are set to demand at least £52 million for the player this summer, although Ornstein’s words cast doubt over the feasibility of obtaining this fee.
