Manchester United allow Rúben Amorim time to come to final verdict on two key players, both face uncertain future

In the search for defensive reinforcements, Rúben Amorim is yet to decide on two key defenders, with the search for a new centre-back now underway.

After the key signings of Leny Yoro and Matthijs De Ligt in last summer’s transfer window, the club is searching for more defensive improvements.

However, some restructuring is in order, which leaves Rúben Amorim and the Manchester United board with a few players potentially on the chopping block.

As Amorim’s rebuild enters a pivotal stage, the media is left speculating as to who will leave the club in the near future.

An indication is set to be given on Sunday, when the Reds face Manchester City, although Diogo Dalot is unavailable after an injury picked up on international duty, along with two others. Fans will be eager to see who will be involved.

Maguire and Shaw’s futures uncertain

Senior figures, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, face an uncertain future under Amorim’s tenure, as the Portuguese manager is given more time to make a decision on their futures.

TeamTalk have reported that United will assess the two defenders over the course of the season, while the scouting department searches for suitable alternatives.

Since returning from a long-term injury late last season, Shaw has slotted straight into the starting eleven and has featured in all three Premier League games so far this season.

The 30-year-old has cemented his position on the left side of the back three, operating with De Ligt and Yoro most of the time.

Maguire follows suit, since resurrecting his career under Amoirm’s regime, the Englishman has become a staple figure in the squad, despite not starting any of the first three league games this season.

Both now face uncertain futures, and while they aren’t getting any younger, the Reds may decide to cash in before the pair’s value decreases.

Contract situation to play key part in defender’s futures

Maguire has less than a year left on his contract at United, although the club has an option to trigger a one-year extension in that contract.

Despite being a key figure in the dressing room, the club may make a cut-throat decision on his future at 32 years old and decide to sell him soon.

Shaw has a similar situation; his contract expires in 2027, meaning less than two years remain before a decision must be made.

With reported interest from Saudi clubs in the summer, Shaw has many possible suitors, which eases the financial burden United could find themselves in.

That said, Amorim and the club have time to make that decision, and the fans will be eager to see how the defence shapes up in the future.
