Manchester United have been advised to make a move for a player who was already on the club’s radar last summer.
It was clear to see that going into the summer transfer window, Rúben Amorim needed to overhaul a Manchester United forward line that scored just 44 goals in the Premier League last season.
On the first day of the transfer window, the club announced that they had triggered Matheus Cunha’s release clause, a sign of intent to change his forward line.
While also signing Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško to bring in a new front three, United also sanctioned the sales of several forwards, including Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, and Rasmus Højlund.
After recording United’s worst-ever start to a season, Amorim’s men now find themselves unbeaten in five league games, including a 2-1 win over bitter rivals Liverpool.
After 11 games, United have scored 19 goals, almost half the total amount from last season, with just over a quarter of the season played.
Manchester United should re-sign Danny Welbeck
Although United’s front line has started well, Don Hutchinson believes that the club should re-sign former Red Danny Welbeck, who left the club after the 2013-14 season, when he joined Arsenal.
Speaking to Sportscasting, Hutchinson said, “I mean, it’d be a brilliant fit. He’d be a fantastic signing because Danny Welbeck’s one of those players, where if he went back to Man United, it would be like when Jonny Evans returned.
“When Jonny Evans went back there a couple of years ago, he was happy to be a sort of mentor inside the dressing room. He was happy to be a mentor to the players that were playing. He was happy to play his part when needed. He was happy to be on the bench. I think Danny Welbeck going to Man United would be a really good fit in terms of he can still play, he can still score goals, and he’s still really fit.
“But he would still have the attitude where it would be a fantastic move forward, being back to Man United with the knowledge that he’d be mentoring the likes of Sesko. I think it would be a perfect move.”
Welbeck links nothing new, but should the club pursue such a deal?
Before the signing of Šeško, United’s initial target was signing Liam Delap, but after he joined Chelsea, Jason Wilcox, United’s Director of Football, started to look at a secondary striker, with Danny Welbeck’s name coming up on the shortlist.
While Wilcox was eager to make a deal for the 34-year-old happen, Sir Jim Ratcliffe felt he couldn’t offer a deal of over one year for the striker.

As the club’s transfer strategy shifts to mixing the signing of players with Premier League experience, as well as younger, inexperienced players, as seen by the signings of Leny Yoro and Diego León, if the club were to sign Welbeck, he could prove to be an extremely important figure in the dressing room.
Even if it is just for one year, Welbeck could also then transition into a different role within the club, much like his former teammate Jonny Evans, who is now the club’s Head of Loans and Pathways after retiring. Under his new leadership, 14 academy prospects have gone out on loan this season, with many of them enjoying success out on loan.
