Manager tips Man United target to succeed at Old Trafford if £85m transfer agreement is made
One Manchester United target has been tipped to succeed at Old Trafford by his national team manager if he makes the move.
The Reds are targeting several positions in the summer transfer window, with midfield additions being one of INEOS‘ priorities.
Portuguese outlet Record reports that United has submitted a bid of approximately £51 million for Benfica’s 19-year-old sensation Joao Neves.
This marked the club’s first offer of the summer for the talented young midfielder, who has been previously linked with an Old Trafford move.
However, Benfica has reportedly rejected the bid and are reportedly unwilling to consider any offer below £85 million.
Neves has made six appearances for Portugal since his emergence at Benfica and national team manager Roberto Martínez believes that he’s ready for the step up.
Speaking about the 19-year-old, Martinez was asked by FIVE if Neves has the ability to play for Manchester United, and he responded: “100 per cent.”
He added: “Everything comes into his stride, the quicker the game, the better the opposition, the better his decisions are”.
Neves made his Portugal debut in October last year and immediately earned the respect of his teammates, which Martínez believes is a testament to his quality.
“Something that is very difficult and rare to see, the biggest measurement of a player is the respect of the dressing room,” added Martínez.
“He walked into that dressing room and within three days of training, he made his debut against Bosnia, win away from home.
“While he was on the bench, Joao Cancelo scored a goal, and he sprinted to the bench, and he celebrated the goal with Joao Neves, who he met three days before, and I think that’s a measurement of what he is as an individual, someone very respected straight away.”
