Manchester United “advancing” on double free agent swoop, Rúben Amorim needs both players
Manchester United are said to be “advancing” on signing two free agents this summer after what fans and Rúben Amorim saw against Everton.
Manchester United are set to prioritise attacking reinforcements this summer as Rúben Amorim’s side continue to struggle in front of goal.
United’s lack of firepower has been a recurring issue this season, with the team often failing to score more than once per game. Their inconsistent form at Old Trafford has only heightened concerns.
Last month, the club loaned out several first-team forwards, including Antony to Real Betis, Marcus Rashford to Aston Villa, and Ethan Wheatley to Walsall for the remainder of the season.
Despite these departures, United did not add any attacking reinforcements in January. Their only arrivals were defensive signings—left-back Patrick Dorgu from Lecce and centre-back Ayden Heaven from Arsenal—though Amorim has suggested Dorgu could also be utilised in a more advanced role.
United advancing with two free agents
The club are not expected to have a lot of money to sign players this summer, with some reports suggesting that the current budget sits at just £20-30 million, although the club could make upwards of a further £100 million in sales.
With this in mind, the club are likely to take a serious look at the free-agent market this summer, and according to reports from Spain, United are already advancing in signing two players via this route in the coming months.
According to the report, Amorim’s team have now set their sites on Lille duo Jonathan David and Angel Gomes for transfers by order of the head coach himself, with both players set to leave the Ligue 1 side once the season ends.
David has several clubs chasing him due to the fact he would be able to join without a transfer fee, although the Old Trafford outfit are aiming to get ahead of the pack and bring him in.
Similarly, Gomes has also reportedly become a priority option due to his lack of a transfer fee, with his versatility and profile making the move an interesting one to strengthen in midfield.
David and Gomes are must-signs this summer
There have been some doubts by fans as to whether Gomes has the physicality to thrive in the Premier League as he stands at 5ft 6in, but with Ligue 1 widely considered to be the second most physical league in Europe after the English top-flight, this would hopefully not be an issue.
Amorim will be losing Christian Eriksen this summer, and Casemiro is also likely to depart Old Trafford, so signing a new midfielder is a must. Gomes has thrived both as an attacking midfielder and also playing a deeper role, and he could be a fantastic understudy and rotation replacement for Bruno Fernandes.
Beyond this, as Gomes as a Carrington Academy graduate, he understands the pressures of United and has a clear love for the club.
On the flip side, David represents a brilliant value-for-money transfer for a striker who is much more established striker than either Rasmus Højlund or Joshua Zirkzee, and may suit Amorim’s system better than the current pair.
Again, with United strapped for cash, David offers a free transfer solution for the club to then allocate extra money elsewhere.
United may see as many as nine first-team players depart in the summer, so they need to sign five or six new first-team players in the next transfer market. If two of those can come from free transfers, then more money can be utilised to sign more high-quality players.
