The 2025 transfer market offers the chance for Manchester United to secure some free-agent signings, and there are four who fit the bill for Rúben Amorim this summer.

Manchester United are eyeing new recruits in multiple areas in the coming summer transfer window as the club look to hand head coach Rúben Amorim the tools he needs to succeed at Old Trafford.

The club are reportedly eyeing a new centre-back, deeper midfielder, left-back and striker as priority positions, although who they sign may also depend on who departs.

United fans are set to see multiple players depart this summer, with Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans, and Victor Lindelöf out of contract, while those such as Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Casemiro are all likely to be sold.

However, United are said to have as little as £20 million this summer prior to sales, and there are plenty of players who may be free to sign in the summer once their contracts expire at the end of June 2025.

Below, we have listed four players who are due to become free agents that may fit the mould of what Rúben Amorim is looking for this summer.

Jonathan David (striker)

Which club is he leaving: Jonathan David is set to depart from Ligue 1 side Lille on

How he could fit under Amorim: United are looking for a new striker in the coming months after poor performances from Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Højlund.

The 25-year-old has 20 goals and nine assists so far this season in 35 appearances and would bring both experience and authority to United’s front line.

What has been said: “Do you want any clues about my future? You will all know in due time, that is at the end of the season. I will not comment before then,” David recently told French press.

“First of all, I want to finish this season well, the end looks exciting and I want to play well and help the team. And when the season is over, the decision will be made and announced.”

Joshua Kimmich (midfielder)

Which club is he leaving: Joshua Kimmich’s current Bayern Munich contract expires in a few months after ten years at the Bundesliga club.

How he could fit under Amorim: United are struggling for a player who can defend in midfield and also play progressive passes up the pitch. Kimmich could be just that player, and at 30 years old, he would also bring valuable experience.

As a player who has won eight Bundesliga titles and one Champions League, he would instill a much-needed winning mentality to the United dressing room.

What has been said: According to various reports, although Kimmich is open to staying at Bayern, he is carefully considering his future and has yet to sign a new deal.

Angel Gomes (midfielder)

Which club is he leaving: Angel Gomes has already confirmed that he will leave Ligue 1 side Lille at the end of the season.

How he could fit under Amorim: Although Gomes is short, he has proven himself to be a force to be reckoned with in France, which many hold as the second most physical league in Europe after the Premier League.

Gomes has shown proficiency both as an attacking midfielder and in a deeper role. This versatility would likely be appreciated by Amorim considering the pending departure of Eriksen.

Beyond this, Gomes is a Carrington Academy graduate, so he is well-versed in the history of United and very open about his love for the club.

What has been said: “Do I imagine myself coming back one day? It’s home,” Gomes commented earlier this season when asked if he would be open to an Old Trafford return.

“I would love to come back. But you never know in football. I just have to keep my feet on the ground and keep playing, making the most of it. I can’t predict what will happen in the future.”

Jonathan Tah (centre-back)

Which club is he leaving: Jonathan Tah looks set to depart Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen in the coming months once his contract expires.

How he could fit under Amorim: United are losing Evans and Lindelöf in the coming months, and with Harry Maguire also entering his final year, his future is in doubt too.

Tah would slot in as one of Amorim’s back three defenders and could provide much-needed cover for the first-choice defenders as well as experience, being 29 years old and a full German international.

What has been said: Tah has been closely linked with Barcelona in the last few months, but with the player yet to sign a pre-contract agreement, there would still be time for United to contact his agent and understand the feasibility of his signing.
