One Manchester United man has been praised for his “incredible” performances as Rúben Amorim is demanded to adjust the club’s transfer plans.

Manchester United are within the 2025 January transfer window while the club is in a challenging period, having endured four consecutive defeats across the Premier League and Carabao Cup before the new year.

A battling 2-2 draw with league leaders Liverpool, however, has offered a glimmer of hope, easing some of the anxiety around the team’s form.

Rúben Amorim is tasked with addressing the squad’s glaring weaknesses, including the need for a left-back, a centre-back, a striker, and multiple midfielders. However, financial constraints caused by heavy spending under Erik ten Hag have made significant reinforcements a difficult prospect.

To navigate this situation, United are prioritising player sales in January and the summer, aiming to free up funds and create the resources needed to rebuild and steady the ship.

Parker demands a change in transfer plans

Former United player Paul Parker, who played as a full-back for Sir Alex Ferguson between 1991 and 1996, has explained that he feels United need to look at a left wing-back.

Previously, reports have stated that United was looking to secure a left full-back who can also play higher up the field, but speaking with BetFred, Parker has stated Amorim must adjust this and look for a player who is specifically well suited to wing-back.

“I think they need to look at a left wing-back if they are going to play the way Amorim wants to play,” Parker said when asked what areas of the squad the club should look to strengthen in the January transfer window.

“We have to say yes to a left wing-back and not a left-back. A left wing-back is what they need and one with a natural left foot to add that bit of balance. It works so well if we do that.”

Further, Parker also pointed to right wing-back as another area the club could look to add to, although he does note that right-back Noussair Mazraoui has been “incredible” across the defensive line.

“Regarding right-wing back, Diallo can do a job out there but he’s better on the right side of the attacking three. I think Mazraoui has done great, but he can go and play anywhere in that five and do a great job – his consistency is incredible – only one mistake all season with the penalty against Bournemouth.

“The other area of course is centre-forward. He needs a centre-forward badly and everyone knows that. That is what was missing against Liverpool and what has been missing all season.”

Parker names Davies as the man United must target

Further, Parker was asked if he has any specific names that United should be looking into in January.

“I never look at it that way,” he replied. “People say things to me and I sway my head around and say yes or no.

“Although, if I’m looking at a wing-back, someone who can play as a natural wing-back because they’re tenacious when they defend and they’re aggressive when they go forward. I’d say somebody like Alphonso Davies.

“In my opinion, you need someone who is athletic, doesn’t need to be asked to run and just loves working up and down the pitch and loves the freedom. If people try to man mark him, he will take them away and affect their game as well and not accept being marked.”

Unfortunately for Parker, Davies is a highly unrealistic January transfer target. Although the Bayern Munich star’s current contract expires in June, he is engaged in talks regarding a possible extension.
