Manchester United handed bizarre transfer boost amid three-way battle with Manchester City
Manchester United have been handed a bizarre transfer boost as their pursuit to sign a midfielder for Rúben Amorim this summer starts to develop.
Manchester United are searching for midfield reinforcements as Rúben Amorim’s side continue to struggle for consistency in the middle of the park.
United’s lack of content creativity has been a persistent issue this season, with the team frequently failing to score more than once per game. Their struggles at Old Trafford have only intensified concerns.
Last month, the club loaned out several first-team forwards, with Antony joining Real Betis, Marcus Rashford moving to Aston Villa, and Ethan Wheatley heading to Walsall for the remainder of the campaign.
Meanwhile, it’s expected that multiple midfielders will depart once the season ends, with Christian Eriksen out of contract and Casemiro surplus to requirements.
Therefore, the club are looking to dive into the summer market to sign new players that can better suit the demands of Amorim’s new style of football at Old Trafford.
A bizarre new transfer twist
With United looking for new midfielders, one player they were linked with in the summer is Netherlands international Xavi Simons, although the 21-year-old headed on loan from PSG to RB Leipzig, seemingly ending the chances of him joining at Old Trafford.
Then, in the January window, the Bundesliga club made his move permanent, with the midfielder signing a contract until June 2027, which many saw as confirmation that Simons was now entirely off the market.
However, Bundesliga transfer inside Christian Falk has explained that despite the new terms, Leipzig are likely to make the bizarre move of selling the player just months after purchasing him.
“It’s looking likely that Leipzig will sell Xavi Simons in the summer transfer window,” Falk explained to the CaughtOffside.
“It was a little bit surprising that Leipzig committed to a permanent deal with Simons. At the beginning, they didn’t think they’d get this chance, but they did it for €50 million, which isn’t a lot for this kind of player. His contract, of course, isn’t that long, running just until 2027.
“So, you see, his stock is rising! Leipzig are thinking they have signed a player for €50m who has the potential to be an €80 million player, so they could earn a lot of money on a potential sale. I’m sure there’s a gentleman’s agreement or a release clause, which would see Simons sold in the summer.”
United one of three teams tracking Simons
Continuing, Falk explained that United are one of three teams who are tracking the Netherlands midfielder, with Liverpool and Manchester City also in the ring for his signature.

“Liverpool are interested, as are Manchester City and Manchester United. Xavi Simons won’t stay at Leipzig for his whole career – but everyone already knows that!
“Leipzig had the chance because PSG were happy to sell as they can’t loan so many players in Europe (they’re only allowed six).
“It’s great news for Leipzig, as they’ve brought in another high-quality player, and if he has to leave, they can now earn a lot of money. Good deal!”
