Manchester United are set to enter the race for a £60 million star under Rúben Amorim that will leave one Old Trafford player worried.

Manchester United have appointed Rúben Amorim as their new Head Coach, following the departure of Erik ten Hag from Old Trafford.

Ten Hag, who received a contract extension in the summer, struggled to find form this season, with United currently in 14th place in the Premier League and 21st in the Europa League.

His exit was confirmed on Monday morning, prompting United to act swiftly in naming Amorim as his successor.

Amorim will begin his role on 11 November as the international break kicks off, with his first game in charge scheduled for 24 November, away to Ipswich Town.

Summer transfer targets

As always when a new manager arrives, there has been rampant speculation surrounding who his summer transfers will be – and one man on everyone’s lips is Sporting striker Viktor Gyökeres, who has scored 20 goals under Amorim so far this season.

According to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, United are now set to enter the race for the Swedish international once Amorim takes charge and assesses his new club’s situation.

“It is possible that the Red Devils will become involved soon. Close sources believe this will happen, as Amorim is a big fan of Gyökeres,” Plettenberg explained.

When asked about the rumours, Gyökeres said, “Going with Amorim to Manchester United? I don’t know.

“I’m here. As you can see, I enjoy it at Sporting. It’s nothing I really think about. I’m sad about him [Amorim] leaving. We wish him all the best.”

A worry for one player

United’s interest in Gyökeres will worry 2024 summer signing Joshua Zirkzee. The Netherlands international joined United for £36 million but has failed to make much of an impression.

Across his 14 appearances so far, he has just one goal and two assists, while other forwards, such as Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Højlund, are establishing themselves as key players this season.

However, Ruud van Nistelrooy is still hoping the 23-year-old can make his mark on the team, saying on Thursday: “Josh came in, he’s a young player with a lot of potential.

“He’s a typical number nine in the sense of his hold-up play is very good, he’s very strong in the combination play, he’s a different type than Rasmus. Rasmus is more of a nine that plays higher up on the pitch, getting in the back of defenders and Josh is more the one coming to the ball and getting the team playing.

“The Crystal Palace game, he was excellent, it was one of his best performances and showed his potential. Another one with a lot of talent.

“A good age, a lot of potential to develop, look after, give him time, he will get better and better and better, and I think also will be a very good player for this club.”
