Manchester United may fund a summer transfer for striker Viktor Gyökeres by selling a Rúben Amorim favourite to Real Madrid for £50 million in 2025.

Manchester United are adopting a more pragmatic approach under Rúben Amorim, marking a clear shift from the high-spending era of Erik ten Hag.

During Ten Hag’s tenure, the club spent over £600 million across five transfer windows, an ambitious investment that many argue failed to deliver the expected results on the pitch.

Amorim has already outlined the team’s key priorities: a prolific striker, a dependable centre-back, a solid left-back, and potentially additional reinforcements in midfield. These positions are crucial for United as they look to align their competitive goals with a more sustainable financial outlook.

To fund these improvements, the club are planning to sell some of their high-value assets, signaling a strategic and efficient approach to rebuilding the squad. This evolution not only reflects financial prudence but also highlights a renewed focus on restoring Manchester United’s standing at the top of the game.

United may fund Gyökeres transfer through Dalot sale

According to a new report from The Daily Star, United are set to step up their interest in striker Viktor Gyökeres in January after Amorim told the club he can’t wait until the summer to sign a new striker amid the club’s goal struggles.

Gyökeres has a release clause of around £80 million in his current Sporting CP contract that president Frederico Varandas will hold United to should they try and sign him in Janaury.

This comes amid a report from iNews earlier this month claiming that Amorim would be tempted to sell Diogo Dalot in the winter market as Real Madrid line up making a £50 million offer for the Portuguese international this month.

Although Amorim is said to see Dalot as a favourite part of his squad, the 25-year-old’s potential sale is attractive as it would provide funds for the striker.

Real Madrid are said to be eyeing Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold as their No. 1 choice in the position as he would be a free transfer.

The fact that long-term right-back Dani Carvajal has sustained a serious injury means Los Blancos are willing to send United a £50m bid for Dalot this month.

What Amorim thinks about Dalot amid struggling form

Amorim has previously admitted that he knows Dalot is better on the right-hand side compared to the left, where he has been filling in as an auxiliary wing-back amid the club’s injury struggles.

However, the 39-year-old also stressed that he sees Dalot as a key figure within his squad but wants to manage his minutes after the amount of football he has played in the last 18 months after being a regular under Ten Hag.

“He’s very powerful. We have to rotate him sometimes because although he always looks fresh, it’s not like that, he’s not a machine,” Amorim said.

“He’s a very good player. He’s better on the right and we will play him there more [but] nowadays a player who can play on both sides is perfect because you can put him in different positions.

“I expect the same as you saw last season. A great player who can help the team. He’s really a team player, you can feel it in the way he lives the game, so he’s very important for us.”
