Manchester United duo in trouble as Rúben Amorim identifies ‘priority’ summer transfer
Two Manchester United stars are in trouble this summer as Rúben Amorim has reportedly identified a priority area for new signings in the summer market.
Manchester United are set to prioritise defensive signings in the summer transfer window as Rúben Amorim looks to shore up a backline that has conceded too many goals this season.
The club moved to strengthen their defence in January, signing young centre-back Ayden Heaven from Arsenal and wing-back Patrick Dorgu from Lecce. However, their problems at the back persist, with Lisandro Martínez now sidelined until November.
Several departures are expected in the summer. Victor Lindelöf will leave when his contract expires in June, while Jonny Evans is also likely to move on.
Questions also remain over the futures of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. Shaw has not started for United in almost a year due to ongoing injury issues, while Malacia, currently on loan at PSV, is not in Amorim’s long-term plans.
Amorim identifies summer signing areas
While United may see up to nine significant first-team players leave Old Trafford in the summer, plans are being made to bring in new recruits to help bouldster a dysfunctional squad at the club.
Although Amorim has admitted that United will need to sell players in order to make new signings in the summer window, a report from GiveMeSport has stated that United are eyeing a new left wing-back.
Beyond this, the club are said to be eyeing a new first-choice striker, a deep-lying midfielder, and a central defender.
With Casemiro set to to depart this summer, a deep midfielder makes sense, while the continued struggles of Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Højlund point to the necessity of a new striker.
With Lindelöf and Evans both set to depart and Martínez unavailable for a significant period of time, there is no doubt United will be looking to secure a central defender, preferably a left-footed one.
Two United stars are in trouble
While the other positions identified make sense, both Malacia and Shaw will be alarmed to see the club wanting to sign yet another left wing-back after bringing in Dorgu.

Despite starting on the right against Leicester City, Dorgu is expected to play as a left wing-back in the long term, and with the club looking to add a second to their ranks, this may spell the end of both players’ Old Trafford tenures.
Malacia’s loan move to PSV includes a buy option that would allow the Dutch club to sign him for around £8.3 million, while there have been previous reports that Amorim would be fine to see Shaw put on the market in the summer.
Shaw has not started a game for United in almost a year, and despite playing three times under Amorim earlier on in his reign, the defender keeps suffering injury setbacks that have seen him miss the last two months of football.
