Manchester United eyeing £42m Bundesliga ‘modern defender’ seen as ideal cover for Lisandro Martínez

With summer transfer window approaching, Manchester United has been linked with Bayern Leverkusen defender to provide cover for the ever tenacious but injury prone Lisandro Martínez.

One of the reasons why INEOS appointed Rúben Amorim was his intention to consistently implement his playing philosophy at Manchester United.

Amorim arrived at Old Trafford with a clear identity 3-4-3 system that values structure, intensity, and technical quality across all lines.

While the squad has shown signs of adapting, one area that already looks thin is the left side of the back three.

Even though Lisandro Martínez is the clear first choice on the left of the back three, his repeated injuries raise immediate questions about his long-term availability.

Right now, there’s growing interest from United in signing a defender who can fill the void when the Argentine is unavailable.

United eyeing Leverkusen defender Hincapié

23-year-old Ecuadorian Piero Hincapié has been on the radar of several top clubs across Europe like Liverpool and Tottenham, following another solid campaign in Bundesliga.

Adding to his defensive qualities, Hincapié has scored three goals and provided two assists in 37 appearances in all competitions.

The defender who helped Leverkusen win the Bundesliga and reach the Europa League final last season reportedly has a £42 million release clause, a figure that could prove to be a bargain for Man United.

The latest report from the Spanish outlet Sport has suggested that Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapié is also being considered by both Real Madrid and United as they look to strengthen their defences.

With Amorim expected to stick with his back three system at Old Trafford, Hincapié will fits the profile of a left-footed centre-back United are looking for.

Hincapié could be ideal backup for Martínez

As Manchester United look to add quality depth to the left side of defence, Piero Hincapié emerges as a natural fit behind Lisandro Martínez.

His pace, aggression, and ability to carry the ball suit the demands of a back three, especially in a system that requires defenders to be comfortable on the ball.

That adaptability and mentality haven’t gone unnoticed by his manager, Xabi Alonso, who spoke highly of Hincapié’s development:

“He’s a very modern defender. He can play in different positions. He’s served us as a fullback but has also been the left centre-back when we’ve played with a back three. He’s aggressive, is making better decisions when he has the ball.”

“Backs himself more to play diagonal passes and get in behind. It motivates me to be a player with his potential and desire because he helps you and you help him. He’s a great player.” Xabi Alonso told Bundesliga Website.

In Man United squad being reshaped for the future, Hincapié could quietly become one of the most important pieces for Amorim.
