Manchester United could sign “best in the world” in his position, Rúben Amorim sees him as the “ideal” transfer
Manchester United may be set to sign one of the “best” left-backs in the world, with Rúben Amorim seeing Nuno Mendes as an “ideal” transfer for the club.
Manchester United are reportedly targeting Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes for a 2025 transfer, as Rúben Amorim looks to resolve the defensive frailties that have troubled his side.
United’s backline has been a source of concern under Amorim, with set-piece vulnerabilities standing out as a recurring issue. The left-back position, in particular, has been a longstanding weakness that the club is keen to address.
Luke Shaw, United’s primary left-back, has struggled with injuries throughout his career, including a devastating double leg fracture in a Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven in 2015.
Tyrell Malacia, Shaw’s backup, recently returned after a gruelling 17-month recovery following a severe knee injury that required multiple surgeries.
Diogo Dalot has been covering at left-back in their absence, but Amorim has publicly acknowledged that Dalot is far more comfortable playing in his natural position on the right. Bringing in Nuno Mendes would provide a long-term solution to this critical problem area.
United in position to sign “best in the world” Mendes
Speaking on a recent Sky Sports transfer podcast, prominent reporter Dharmesh Sheth sat down with broadcaster Sam Tighe to speak about United’s potential signing of Mendes.
“He’s has only got 18 months left on his contract,” Sheth explained. “Talks so far between PSG and his representatives have failed to find a resolution.
“PSG don’t want to get to a situation in the summer where he’ll be six months away from sealing a pre-contract agreement with another club.
“The ideal scenario is they want to sort out a new contract with him but if that’s not going to happen, they’re going to try and do a deal as quickly as possible.”
Tighe then took his time to explain just how exciting Mendes could be at United as he is one of the best left-backs in world football.
“This would be one of the biggest coups of all time,” Tighe said of the potential transfer. “There is a genuine case that he is the best left-back in the world. He’s absolutely top-five, almost certainly top-three.
“If Man United can sign him, what a mood changer!”
Amorim sees Mendes as an ideal signing
Surrounding the latest on Mendes, reports last week claimed that Amorim sees the 22-year-old as an “ideal” signing at United.

It’s stated that United are now “determined to accelerate” their pursuit of Mendes and has engaged in active talks in an attempt to secure him in the summer of 2025.
However, adding to the information above that Sheth provided, PSG are said to be demanding as much as £55 million, with United well aware that the Ligue 1 outfit drive a hard bargain.
It took until deadline day for the two clubs to agree on a £42 million fee for midfielder Manuel Ugarte, and this fee could reach up to £50.5 million depending on bonuses.
Amorim and Mendes have worked together before, with Mendes having made his professional debut under the 39-year-old while at Sporting CP and playing another 46 times for Amorim before his move to PSG in 2021.
