According to a new report, Manchester United aim to land Rúben Amorim his first Old Trafford signing in the “coming days” amid Fabrizio Romano’s latest on Nuno Mendes.

Manchester United are reportedly pursuing Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes ahead of the 2025 transfer windows as Rúben Amorim works to address the defensive frailties that have hampered his team at Old Trafford.

United’s struggles at the back, particularly from set pieces, have been a persistent issue under Amorim’s tenure. Strengthening the defence has become a top priority for the club as they look to regain stability.

The left-back position has been a long-standing problem for United. Luke Shaw, their first-choice for years, has endured a career marked by injuries, including a devastating leg fracture in a Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven in 2015.

Tyrell Malacia, Shaw’s deputy, recently returned to action after a challenging 17-month recovery from a severe knee injury that required multiple surgeries.

In their absence, Diogo Dalot has filled in at left-back, but Amorim has conceded that the Portuguese full-back is more comfortable playing on his natural right-hand side.

United want to seal transfer in the coming days

According to a new report from GiveMeSport, United are aiming to secure a first signing for Amorim in the “coming days” rather than allowing their search to drag on.

It’s detailed that United are aiming for this signature to come in the form of a left-back, and that Mendes is firmly on the club’s radar.

However, securing the 22-year-old in January may be a little too ambitious as PSG are said to be demanding £58 million for his services as they continue to try and push for Mendes to sign a new contract.

Mendes is thought to be unhappy at PSG because he feels their latest contract proposal does not reflect his importance to Luis Enrique’s team.

A report from Germany has also detailed that United have initiated contact with Mendes’ representatives as they explore a deal to bring him to Old Trafford.

Romano provides the latest on Mendes and United

Late last month, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano provided an update on United’s interest in Mendes.

He explained that although United are pushing to sign a left-back in 2025, Mendes is just one of the names on their list and that other options are also being explored.

United are reportedly monitoring Benfica left-back Álvaro Fernández, who left the club last January for the Portuguese side. Initially joining on loan, his move was made permanent soon after.

A transfer for the 21-year-old could be a bargain for United. While his contract includes a £42 million release clause, Rúben Amorim’s side have retained a £16 million buy-back option, valid until 2026.

The club have also previously been linked to Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez, who impressed when his side defeated United 3-0 earlier this month.

At the same time, United remain linked with Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies. The Canadian left-back may depart the Bundesliga club when his contract expires in 2025, and United are said to be exploring a move to bring him to Old Trafford as early as this summer.

However, claims from Germany have also detailed that Davies is still considering a new contract at the Bavarian club, with the race for his signature remaining wide open.
