Manchester United are gearing up for a major turnaround in players this summer, with former Amorim player Morten Hjulmand being one of the Red Devils top targets.
Manchester United have been linked with a number of Rúben Amorim’s Sporting stars over the past months since he’s been in charge, which is no surprise considering how the squad has been performing.
The latest in a long line of transfer rumours is that Danish 25-year-old Morten Hjulmand is being targeted by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co. to bolster up the midfield and relieve some of the pressure from the ever-reliable Bruno Fernandes.
Under the guidance of Amorim, the midfielder went from a decent player to one of the most sought-after defensive midfielders in Europe, which only adds to his eye-watering price tag.
With Casemiro and Christian Eriksen expected to leave in the summer, and Kobbie Mainoo’s future remaining uncertain, United need a big name to occupy the centre of the park if their dreams of success are to be realised any time soon.
United prepared to do what it takes
According to Stretty News, United have identified Hjulmand as a perfect fit for their plans, with the player already being a proven Amorim star, having played under Amorim at Sporting.
The main issue, however, is that the Dane currently has a contract valid until 2028, with a release clause worth around £67 million.
United are hopeful they can lower these figures, though. The Red Devils apparently believe they can reduce the fee to £40-50 million in negotiations.
Can United secure the Sporting star?
United have been linked to multiple Sporting Lisbon players since their new manager’s arrival, with players like Gyokeres and Trincao also on the shopping list.
Fans will just be hoping there isn’t a repeat of the Geovany Quenda saga, who is now set to join league rivals Chelsea after being offered deals by both United and the London outfit.
Should Hjulmand join, there will be big expectations on him to step up in that midfield, but with his wide range of passing from defence to attack and his ‘fiery’ nature on the pitch, he should settle into the role under his former boss nicely.
