Manchester United are aiming to secure a new midfielder this summer as Erik ten Hag continues to inject fresh faces into his Old Trafford squad.

Manchester United have started the summer transfer window strongly, signing Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna for £36 million and securing a deal for 18-year-old centre-back Leny Yoro from Lille.

While Yoro was transferred for a fee of £52 million, INEOS and those at United have been praised for beating out Real Madrid to sign the young sensation, signalling their intent from now on.

It has been widely reported that the club want to sign a midfielder this summer. They have been routinely linked with Paris St. Germain’s 23-year-old Manuel Ugarte, who spent the summer with Urugauy as they secured a third-place finish at the 2024 Copa America tournament.

However, according to the Manchester Evening News, United are now considering Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi as a midfield option this summer.

So far this summer, Zubimendi has been linked with multiple high-profile clubs, such as Arsenal, and was trusted by Luis de la Fuente as he replaced Rodri at half-time for Spain in the 2024 European Championships final.

Following the acquisitions of Zirkzee and Yoro, United are looking at bringing in a midfielder, but no price has been mentioned surrounding how much Zubimendi would cost – but transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has explained both the 25-year-old’s current transfer status and the release clause in his Sociedad contract.

“We keep hearing a lot of stories about Martin Zubimendi,” Romano started, speaking to CaughtOffside earlier this month. “Some outlets are now stating that he is unlikely to leave Real Sociedad as he is happy and not looking to leave the Basque region.

“However, my understanding remains that this is not decided yet. Zubimendi’s future, his decision, is still not clear yet – it remains an open situation & he has a €60 million (around £50 million) release clause.”

The MEN article also states that United are expecting one more midfielder to leave the club this summer after the expiry of Sofyan Amrabat’s loan deal, but that bringing in a new player does not depend on the future of Casemiro.

United have turned down bids for Scott McTominay so far this window, but interest remains in the Scottish international from both the Premier League and those in Turkey.
