Liverpool may be about to ruin Manchester United’s 2025 transfer plans as they reportedly decide to bid £70 million on a Premier League star.

So far this summer, the club has made significant investments, bringing in Joshua ZirkzeeLeny YoroMatthijs de Ligt, and Noussair Mazraoui for a combined total of £139 million, securing talent across four crucial positions in the squad.

On the other side of the transfer dealings, they’ve managed to generate around £60 million through player sales, with Aaron Wan-BissakaMason GreenwoodWilly Kambwala among those departing Old Trafford to pursue careers elsewhere.

Although the 2024 summer transfer window remains open, with United actively pursuing additional vital targets, it appears the club is already laying the groundwork for potential signings in 2025.

According to English reports from earlier this week, United haven’t given up on signing Jarrad Branthwaite, though they recognize the transfer might have to wait until next summer.

If Branthwaite remains at Everton over the next 12 months, United plan to pursue the deal again. The player agreed on personal terms with United earlier this summer, signalling his willingness to join.

However, Manchester City and Liverpool are reportedly very interested in the 22-year-old. If Branthwaite continues to impress at Everton, a three-way battle for his signature could be on the horizon.

And now, in a new report from The Sun, it is claimed that Liverpool are ready to agree on an initial fee of £63 million and pay £7 million in add-ons for the transfer of Branthwaite from Everton in a deal worth £70 million.

After United’s bids of £45 million and £50 million were rejected earlier this summer, Everton stood firm on their £70-75 million asking price. Although United seemingly felt safe as it was thought that no one would pay this in 2024, they may have been wrong.

Should Liverpool succeed in buying their first player from Everton in over two decades, this would undoubtedly scupper United’s plans for 2025.

It looks likely that at least three more centre-backs will leave Old Trafford next summer. Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelöf will be out of contract in 2025, while Harry Maguire is not getting any younger.

Maguire’s deal also expires in 2025, but the club can extend it by another season if they choose to.
