Manchester United have announced the contract extension of Jonny Evans for a further season following fantastic performances under Erik ten Hag last campaign.

When Manchester United announced the signing of Jonny Evans on a one-year contract, some fans questioned why the club had chosen to sign the then-36-year-old centre-back, ten years on from his original departure.

However, his utility quickly came in handy following injuries to Lisandro Martínez and Raphaël Varane. Evans became used as a backup defender who played over 1,500 minutes last campaign, including a vital role in the FA Cup run, appearing in four of the six matches.

Following these performances, while rumours are rife surrounding United’s other defenders, Evans has now been handed a further one-year deal.

Evans’ extension

“I am delighted to have extended my contract at Manchester United for another season,” Evans told club media in reaction to his one-year deal.

“To play for this great club and feel the support from our incredible fans is always a privilege.

“Returning to the club last season was an honour; representing the team on the pitch alongside fantastic team-mates under an excellent manager.

“Winning the FA Cup together was an unforgettable experience; I know we can challenge for more trophies in the season ahead.”

Transfers to follow

Evans’ one-year deal all but confirms that the club will see multiple defenders leave this summer.

United are targeting Leny Yoro, Jarrad Branthwaite, and Matthijs de Ligt in the position this summer, with the club ideally wanting to sign all three players.

Although Raphaël Varane has left the club, Victor Lindelöf and Harry Maguire‘s futures are in serious doubt. Both players have been heavily linked with moves away, with Lindelöf reportedly wanted by Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce.

Meanwhile, Willy Kambwala has reportedly refused to sign a new contract. His current deal expires in 2025, meaning if he does not sign one before the end of the window, United may have to sell the young Frenchman to avoid him leaving for free next summer.
