Manchester United remain in talks for two transfers as Erik ten Hag hunts for a midfielder to join his squad this summer.

Manchester United began the 2024 transfer window with a bang, securing Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna and outmanoeuvring Real Madrid to sign Leny Yoro from Lille.

These two signings, costing a combined £88 million, meant the club needed to sell players to finance additional transfers. Erik ten Hag responded by approving the sales of Mason Greenwood, Willy Kambwala, and Alvaro Fernandez, among others.

United then shifted their focus to strengthening key areas, particularly in midfield, right-back, and centre-back. On Saturday, it was revealed that United had agreed on a fee with Bayern Munich for the signings of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, with both transfers set to be finalized simultaneously.

Both players were at Carrington undergoing their medicals on Monday and are set to be unveiled as new players in the coming days. United have, therefore, turned to the final priority option as they hunt for a midfielder.

According to Sky Sports, United are continuing a double-pronged midfield search as they take the potential buys of both Burnley’s Sander Berge and AS Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana.

It is explained that dialogue “remains open” surrounding the French international. Other reports have claimed that Burnley will demand around £30 million for their 26-year-old, but should this price be met, they will not stand in the way of his move.

While Casemiro’s performance against Manchester City during the Community Shield last weekend was undoubtedly an encouraging sign that the Brazilian still has something to offer Ten Hag, the Dutch manager will want another option in the middle of the park.

United are set to feature in four competitions this season, including at least eight Europa League games, meaning they will likely feature over 50 times across the campaign.

Ten Hag will need a robust and big squad if he wants to compete on all four fronts, which is the expectation this season.
