“The truth is…” Alvaro Fernandez directly addresses Manchester United return amid Rúben Amorim transfer demand
Benfica’s Alvaro Fernandez has directly addressed rumours connecting him with a return to Manchester United amid Rúben Amorim’s summer transfer demand.
Manchester United are preparing to overhaul their creative outlets this summer as Rúben Amorim looks to fix the team’s ongoing struggles in supplying the forward line.
United’s lack of creativity has been a recurring issue this season, with the team often failing to break down defences and struggling to score more than once or twice per game. Their inconsistency at Old Trafford has only amplified concerns over their midfield control.
January saw several attacking players depart on loan, with Antony joining Real Betis, Marcus Rashford moving to Aston Villa, and Ethan Wheatley heading to Walsall for the remainder of the campaign.
Further midfield departures are expected in the summer, with Christian Eriksen set to leave when his contract expires and Casemiro no longer considered part of Amorim’s long-term plans.
As a result, United are preparing for a crucial summer transfer window, targeting players who can inject creativity, energy, and tactical flexibility to fit Amorim’s vision, with wing-backs a key area of the squad.
Fernandez opens up on United links
United have long been linked to Benfica left-back Alvaro Fernandez since he departed Old Trafford last year, with the player growing into a quality attacking full-back who many feel could add to Amorim’s current squad.
United let Benfica sign Fernandez for around £5 million in the summer but installed a £16 million buy-back clause in his contract, which some have pointed out is fantastic value for money for the player he has become.
However, in a new interview with A Bola (via Sport Witness), the 21-year-old has said he is overlooking United’s reported interest and buy-back clause, as he just wants to concentrate on football.
“The truth is that I’m overlooking it a bit,” he said. “I’m concentrating on what I have to do because every three days I have a game. There’s always interest from teams, and everyone wants to grow, but I’m doing very well here (at Benfica).
“Manchester United have an option to buy that has been signed, but I’m very happy here.”
Amorim’s new transfer demand
According to multiple reports of late, Amorim wants the club to sign a new left wing-back this summer in order to bolster his attacking options out wide.

Although the club signed Patrick Dorgu for the position in January, it’s said that Amorim wants another player amid the uncertainty surrounding Luke Shaw’s future.
It also seems as if Tyrell Malacia will depart permanently in the summer having left on loan to PSV Eindhoven for the rest of the campaign.
The Dutch club have a £8.3 million buy-option in his loan deal, but even if this is not triggered, it’s expected that United will look to offload the Netherlands full-back in order to free up space and cash for fresh signings.
