Manchester United have seemingly responded to Chelsea’s latest stance as they up their asking price for Alejandro Garnacho in the final days of the winter transfer window.

Manchester United are looking to offload several players in the January transfer window as they seek to generate funds ahead of a crucial summer.

Rúben Amorim’s side have made a strong start to 2025, winning four of their six matches, with the only major setback being a 3-1 defeat to Brighton.

Despite pressing needs for reinforcements at left-back, in midfield, and in attack, United’s transfer business had been slow. However, the club have reportedly secured deals for Patrick Dorgu from Lecce and Ayden Heaven from Arsenal, both of whom will bolster Amorim’s defensive options.

Amorim has made it clear he wants to keep the majority of his squad intact, but United are still prepared to offload several players before the window closes. Loan moves are expected to dominate the departures, with Antony already sealing a temporary switch to Real Betis for the remainder of the season.

Chelsea’s new stance on Garnacho

Should United sell a player this month, the one who has gathered the most interest is 20-year-old Alejandro Garnacho, with United reluctantly open to his departure as his status as an Academy graduate means any money raised would be pure profit.

With this in mind, both Premier League outfit Chelsea and Serie A giants Napoli have been circling the player, with multiple reports confirming that both clubs had spoken to their entourage and that wages would not be a significant problem.

While Napoli stood firm with United that they would not pay more than £42 million despite United’s £60 million demands, a new report form L’Equipe has stated that Chelsea are now set to ramp up their pursuit of the winger.

This is a change from their previous stance, where they were said to just be sounding out the feasibility of a deal, and are now “insistent” that they will launch an attack for Garnacho during the final days of the summer.

United up their demands for Garnacho

However, with Chelsea now reportedly eyeing making a move and Napoli clearly not serious in their interest beyond looking to get a cheap deal, United have reacted.

Previous reports have stated that United would settle for an offer of around £60-70 million, but the French outlet has now stated that, with Chelsea interested, United have stated that their true valuation is now £80 million, which is much closer to Garnacho’s mathematical value.

The L’Equipe states that Chelsea are not put off by United’s £80 million demand as they are expecting fresh funds to arrive from the sale of French forward Christopher Nkunku amid interest from Bayern Munich.

Should Bayern sign Nkunku and Chelsea secure Garnacho, this opens the door for Mathys Tel to join United from the Bundesliga giants in the final days of the window.

It has been claimed that Bayern and Tottenham have agreed to around £50 million for Tel, although the player himself has yet to make a decision and reportedly prefers to sign for United.
