Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a Premier League ace to replace Casemiro this summer following his “incredible” performance against Erik ten Hag last season.

Manchester United are preparing to strengthen their midfield this summer as Rúben Amorim looks to resolve ongoing issues in the centre of the pitch.

United’s lack of creativity has been a major concern this season, with the team frequently struggling to break down opposition defences and failing to score more than once per game. Their inconsistent home form at Old Trafford has only added to concerns over midfield control.

The club sanctioned multiple loan departures in January, with Antony joining Real Betis, Marcus Rashford moving to Aston Villa, and Ethan Wheatley heading to Walsall for the remainder of the campaign.

Further changes are expected in midfield at the end of the season. Christian Eriksen is set to leave when his contract expires, while Casemiro is no longer part of Amorim’s long-term plans.

As a result, United are preparing for a crucial summer transfer window, aiming to recruit midfielders who can add creativity, energy, and tactical discipline to fit Amorim’s style of play.

United eyeing Wharton as Casemiro replacement

With Casemiro likely departing this summer despite his public statement declaring a desire to stay, United are reportedly eyeing Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton as his replacement.

According to CaughtOffside, United are monitoring his situation with Crystal Palace ahead of making a possible move for the Englishman in the summer.

After signing for Crystal Palace in January following a breakout season with Blackburn Rovers, Wharton made his way into England’s 2024 European Championship squad alongside Kobbie Mainoo, with the pair both labelled as a future midfield pairing for England.

However, Juventus have also been credited with interest due to the possible departure of Douglas Luiz, while Liverpool and Arsenal have a history of links to Wharton, too.

Wharton destroyed Erik ten Hag last season

United have multiple midfielders departing this summer, with Eriksen and Casemiro almost certain to both depart, and United have seen up close the skills Wharton possesses.

Toward the end of the 2023/24 campaign, United suffered a horror 4-0 loss against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, with the 21-year-old putting in an “excellent” performance on the night.

He ran the show while Oliver Glanser’s men ran riot over Erik ten Hag’s team, with the England international being given credit for his display despite Michael Olise grabbing the headlines after his two goals.

Despite playing as a deeper midfielder, Wharton grabbed himself an assist after Tyrick Mitchell finisihed a fine second-half cross from the player.

With Crystal Palace employing a similar 3-4-3 system to Amorim, he would be able to slot in the midfield spots well and compete for a place alongside Manuel Ugarte, Toby Collyer, and Bruno Fernandes, with Mainoo expected to play a more advanced role once he returns from injury.
