Rúben Amorim wants 123-goal striker despite Manchester United “opening” Viktor Gyökeres talks
According to reports, Rúben Amorim wants a different striker despite Manchester United opening talks to sign Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting CP this summer.
Manchester United are looking to sign a new striker this summer with Rúben Amorim keen to add firepower to his front line in the coming months.
Despite United recntly recording a 4-0 victory over Everton, with summer striker signing Joshua Zirkzee bagging a brace and Marcus Rashford also clinching two, goals have been a problem.
United were without first-choice No. 9 Rasmus Højlund for the opening two months weeks of the campaign and sit far behind rivals on the Premier League goalscoring charts, having just netted 17 in the competition so far.
This is a far cry from other such as Tottenham Hotspur (28), Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool (26), and Manchester City (22) during the opening 13 games of the campaign.
United “open” Gyökeres talks
According to Sky Germany, United have now initiated “concrete talks” to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres this summer, although in order to sign the 26-year-old Swede, sales will be needed first.
United are now “fully involved” in the transfer for this coming summer window, but face competition from a host of European clubs.
Gyökeres has scored an incredible 24 goals in 20 games for Sporting this season, most of which came under Amorim before the 39-year-old swiched to Manchester last month.
Manchester City are credited with intest as incoming director of football Hugo Viana, who is currently at Sporting, is “pushing hard” for the player to join the blue side of the city in 2025.
Amorim’s alternative striker
However, a report out of Italy last month from journalist Gerardo Fasano explained that despite United’s interest in Gyökeres, Amorim is more focused on signing Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who is curently on loan at Galatasaray.
Osimhen has 123 career goals to his name so far, and it was touted by Fasano that Amorim may look to include Zirkzee in a swap deal for Osimhen.
“Manchester United is said to be on the trail of Victor Osimhen. I have been told that the English, through mister Amorim, could include the former Bologna striker Zirkzee in the negotiations for Osimhen,” Fasano revealed.
“Zirkzee could help (Romelu) Lukaku find himself. Money plus Zirkzee for Osimhen. Amorim has understood that Sporting Lisbon could ask too much for Gyökeres and is testing the waters for Osimhen.
“Zirkzee might not be the ideal striker for the coach. The former Bologna player would instead help Lukaku next season: the two would form an important pair. However, Juventus is also interested in Zirkzee and can count on Thiago Motta, a coach who has greatly enhanced the player.”
