Manchester United are reportedly targeting a £50 million-rated defender who Ruben Amorim once said is ‘very attractive’ for the Premier League.

Ruben Amorim is getting comfortable at Old Trafford in his new role as Manchester United head coach after starting the job at the beginning of the week.

The 39-year-old has met several members of the playing squad, including Mason Mount, Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo.

He will begin his duties on the training pitch at the start of next week once his Visa is approved. The first game under Amorim comes against Ipswich Town away from home in the Premier League.

With the new 3-4-3 system that Amorim plans to implement, he will quickly be able to identify which positions need strengthening the most in upcoming transfer windows.

While United have a lot of defenders on their books, not all of them seem like they will suit the head coach’s system perfectly.

Jonny Evans, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelöf all have uncertain futures at Old Trafford as well, making the signing of a centre-back next summer very likely.

According to a new report from Fichajes, the Reds are interested in signing Sporting defender Goncalo Inacio next summer.

Inacio was a crucial figure in the Sporting defence last term, making 49 appearances during a title-winning season for Amorim’s side.

Despite potential competition from Real Madrid, the report claims that United are planning to reignite their interest in the 23-year-old defender next summer, with the hope that Amorim’s presence can help persuade him of a move.

Reports claim that Inacio has a release clause in the region of £50 million and he was attracting interest from Premier League clubs like Liverpool in the summer window just gone.

When asked about those rumours as Sporting boss in August, Amorim admitted that Inacio would be a ‘very attractive’ player in the transfer market to such teams.

“A lot of news has already come out,” he said. “I don’t know if there have been negotiations. Inácio will play tomorrow. He’s ready. Whatever happens in the market.

“We already have some experience; we know that our players are very attractive for the market. Until it closes, everything is possible. No more or less worried about waiting for the market to close.”
