Manchester United may have the perfect chance to swoop for a fantastic player this summer as he’s being offered to European clubs amid a £15 million price drop.
Manchester United are intensifying their search for attacking reinforcements this summer following a disappointing 2024/25 season, which saw them finish 15th in the Premier League and lose in the Europa League final.
United struggled in front of goal throughout the campaign. Bruno Fernandes led the way with 19 goals, while Amad and Alejandro Garnacho scored 11 each—no player hit the 20-goal mark.
In response, the club are moving decisively in the transfer market. Matheus Cunha is set to join in a £62.5 million deal, and Bryan Mbeumo has given the go-ahead for United to strike a deal with Brentford.
Rúben Amorim’s side are continuing to explore further attacking options but have already missed out on a key target, with Liam Delap completing his move to Chelsea.
Mateta being offered out to European clubs
With United wanting attacking reinforcements, Amorim has also made it clear to the club that he would like players who have Premier League experience.
Cunha and Mbeumo have over 200 combined Premier League appearances, which will go a long way to raising the physical floor of United’s front line, whom often are simply bullied off the ball before they can get a meaningful shot on goal.
Another player with whom the club have been closely linked is Jean-Philippe Mateta, as the Crystal Palace striker has two seasons left on his deal and is approaching his prime years.
According to L’Équipe, the player has now been offered to Marseille, with this report coming just days after it was claimed the player would be available for around £25-30 million, rather than the initially expected £40 million this summer.
United swooping in for Mateta would be good business
While the club’s main target is no doubt Victor Gyökeres, as Amorim wants an experienced forward to lead the line, signing Mateta for the above fee would be a shrewd piece of business from United.
Mateta has 130 games in the Premier League to his name since signing for Palace in January 2022, having scored 17 goals and provided four assists, and won the FA Cup last month.
Should United have the funds to pull off a deal, Mateta coming into the club alongside Gyökeres, amid Rasmus Højlund being targeted by Napoli and Joshua Zirkzee’s long-term role at the club being unclear, would hand Amorim two experienced strikers.
For a side that lacked significant goalscoring talent last season, the additions of Cunha, Mbeumo, Gyökeres, and Mateta would give Amorim the chance to blow teams off the park at Old Trafford and reinstate United among the Premier League’s elite.
