Manchester United have reportedly made their final decision on Sofyan Amrabat as the player returns to Fiorentina training on Wednesday.

On the final day of the 2023 transfer window, Manchester United announced the loan signing of Moroccan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat from Serie A club Fiorentina.

United paid an initial £8.5 million loan fee, with an option to buy the midfielder for an additional £20 million. At the time, it was widely expected that this option would be exercised.

However, Amrabat struggled to meet expectations at Old Trafford. A combination of poor form and injuries limited him to just 30 appearances across all competitions, with only 17 starts. He played fewer minutes than Jonny Evans over the course of the season.

By March 2024, most fans were convinced that United would not trigger Amrabat’s buy option. Nonetheless, his performances towards the end of the season, particularly in the FA Cup final, led some to reconsider his potential value to the team.

United had until Sunday, 21 July (today) to make their decision regarding Amrabat, and according to the Italian outlet Tutto Mercardo Web, they have informed Fiorentina that they will not be triggering his £20 million buy option.

The report states that Amrabat has now made himself available for Fiorentina’s new manager, Raffaele Palladino, and that he will report to training on Wednesday before the side flies to England for pre-season training.

However, Amrabat is unlikely to stay at Fiorentina permanently, with several clubs interested, including those in the Premier League.

Fabrizio Romano has further clarified that, although they have informed Fiorentina that they will not trigger the buy option, they remain interested in him and are willing to discuss different conditions, as Erik ten Hag likes him.

Regardless of the outcome, Amrabat will be most fondly remembered by those at United for his performance in the FA Cup final. Along with the other members of the 2023/24 squad, he brought home Ten Hag’s second trophy in charge of United.

United have been linked to new midfielders this summer, with those such as Paris St. Germain star Manuel Ugarte and Real Sociedad’s 2024 European Championship winner Martin Zubimendi.
