Manchester United have axed their long-standing ambassadorial contract with former manager Sir Alex Ferguson as INEOS continue to cut costs at Old Trafford.

In the last year, INEOS have embarked on a mission to cut costs at Manchester United as much as possible following Sir Jim Ratcliffe‘s acquisition of 27.7% of the club.

His leadership team are now responsible for all football operations at the club, as well as a slice of the commercial operations, and have been embarking on streamlining the efficiency of money around Erik ten Hag‘s team.

Earlier in the year, it was revealed that around 250 jobs are set to be lost at the club as they look to save money in all areas, and Sir Alex Ferguson is about to have his contract with the club axed, too.

Sir Alex axed

According to The Athletic, INEOS have chosen to cut Sir Alex’s long-standing ambassadorial contract, which was granted in 2014. Under this contract, he was being paid £2.16 million a year for his services as a global ambassador.

The report states that in a face-to-face meeting at Old Trafford, Ratcliffe told Ferguson that United are no longer willing to sustain these payments, and the matter has been dealt with amicably.

Ferguson will remain a non-executive director of the club and is welcome to continue attending games, as he has done so often since his retirement.

The greatest

Sir Alex is widely considered to be the greatest manager United have ever had, and possibly that the world has ever seen as his tenure at the club, spanning from 1986 to 2013, was one of the most successful periods in football history.

Taking over a struggling United side, Ferguson transformed the club into a dominant force domestically and internationally. His early years were marked by rebuilding the squad and instilling a winning mentality, culminating in his first major success with the 1990 FA Cup.

The iconic Premier League triumph in 1993, which ended the club’s 26-year league title drought, was a key turning point. Ferguson’s emphasis on youth development, showcased by the famous “Class of ’92,” and his tactical acumen were central to United’s dominance throughout the 1990s.

Under Ferguson’s leadership, Manchester United won 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, and two UEFA Champions League trophies, solidifying their status as a global powerhouse.

His ability to constantly rebuild and adapt teams across different generations while maintaining high standards of success was remarkable. His treble-winning season in 1998-99 remains one of the greatest achievements in football history.

Ferguson retired in 2013, leaving behind an enduring legacy, having established Manchester United as one of the world’s most successful and respected clubs.
