Manchester United are reportedly “seriously considering” bringing in a £42 million player who is said to be open to joining Rúben Amorim’s Old Trafford squad.

Manchester United are looking to sign a new left wing-back for Rúben Amorim during the January transfer window, as defensive struggles continue to hamper the team’s performances.

United’s inability to defend set pieces has been a recurring issue under Amorim, with the left-back position highlighted as an area requiring immediate reinforcement.

Luke Shaw, United’s long-serving left-back, has been plagued by injuries ever since his devastating double leg fracture in a Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven in 2015.

Tyrell Malacia, Shaw’s backup, has also endured setbacks, recently returning from a gruelling 17-month recovery following multiple surgeries on a severe knee injury.

In their absence, Diogo Dalot has been used as cover on the left, but Amorim has acknowledged that Dalot is far better suited to his natural role on the right side of defence.

United seriously considering Fernandez buy-back clause

In the last few weeks, United have been chasing Lecce left-back Patrick Dorgu, with the club having already seen two bids rejected for the 20-year-old.

The Serie A side are reportedly demanding around £34 million for the Danish international, and according to German transfer expert Florien Plettenberg, Amorim is pushing hard for the club to get the deal over the line amid interest from Juventus.

However, with multiple reports stating that United are refusing to go as high as the demands Lecce are offering, the club are “seriously considering” turning their attention to Benfica’s Alvaro Fernandez.

Although the player has a £42 million release clause in his current contract, United have a cerca. £16 million buy option after they sold him to Benfica in 2024.

Fernandez open to United return

The 21-year-old initially left United due to a lack of first-team opportunities under old manager Erik ten Hag.

However, with Amorim now at the helm with his 3-4-3 formation, Fernandez is said to be open to a return to Old Trafford, which would be news to United’s ears.

United are struggling for funds, and although Amorim may see Dorgu as his ideal candidate, Fernandez may represent a better value for money signing as United could end up paying around half of what would be needed for the Denmark star.

However, previous reports have linked Fernandez with a potential return to his Spanish homeland, with both Barcelona and his former club Real Madrid keeping tabs on the player.
