Manchester United prefer a straight loan with no buy option for one of Rúben Amorim’s forgotten players ahead of the January transfer window.
Manchester United’s attack this season has been a clear upgrade from last season. From a blunt forward line that was run into the ground, to an attack with the depth fans have been crying out for.
The summer signings of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko have added not only goals but greater tactical fluidity for Ruben Amorim’s team this season.
Alongside the three summer signings, Mason Mount and Amad have added potency and creativity to the forward line, which has helped lead United to be five games unbeaten so far in the Premier League.
The Red Devils are currently fourth in terms of goals scored in the league with 19 goals. However, there has been one forward who has been on the sidelines for much of the season so far.
Zirkzee prefers a move to Roma
Joshua Zirkzee’s time at United has been mixed to say the least. From being booed off by the fans last season against Newcastle, to re-emerging as an important player and now back to square one.
The Dutch forward has only played a total of 90 minutes across his five appearances in all competitions this season. Even when United play without a striker, Cunha has emerged as the preferred option down the middle rather than Zirkzee.
With aspirations to go to the World Cup, it is clear to see why Zirkzee would want to leave on loan.
According to Corriere Dello Sport, the former Bologna man is enticed by the prospect of playing under Gian Piero Gasparini, who is famed for revitalising forwards and getting scintillating numbers from them. From Josip Illicic to Adamola Lookman, he is the master of it.
A sticking point for the deal is the loan terms. In response, United have made it clear to all parties that they would prefer a straight loan until the end of the season for the player to get minutes.
However, Roma want to include a buy option in any deal, as they have changed their transfer strategy amid Zirkzee’s situation.
United need forward signings even if Zirkzee stays
While United currently appears to have depth, regardless of Zirkzee’s future, Amorim needs reinforcements.
Should Zirkzee leave, United will be left with only one recognised striker in Sesko. With the Slovenian currently out injured, a short-term loan would be vital. An option United have been linked with is Ivan Toney, who would bring bags of Premier League experience despite his time in Saudi Arabia.
With teh African Cup of Nations fast approaching, United will need more options anyway, with Mbeumo and Amad set to depart for the tournament.

If Zirkzee were to stay, he has shown before that he can fill those positions; however, United will again be light on options, and should the Dutchman leave, they would just have Mount available to play on the right.
On top of potentially promoting academy prospects, bringing in an experienced player to fill in the gaps should be important for the side as they look to avoid the burnout and running to the ground of forwards that happened last season.
