Manchester United have been dealt the latest on Harry Maguire and a fresh update on Amad as Rúben Amorim prepares his side to face Real Sociedad in the Europa League.
Rúben Amorim will be hoping his Manchester United side can pick up where they left off in the Europa League as they travel to face Real Sociedad in the competition’s knockout phase.
Despite the side’s poor form in the Premier League and recent FA Cup exit, United have won all three of their European games under the Portuguese head coach, and they have been drawn against the La Liga opposition for the round of 16.
The tie will take place over two legs, with the first coming in San Sebastian on Thursday evening before the return fixture kicks off at Old Trafford a week later.
Following United’s FA Cup exit and poor position in the Premier League, winning the Europa League trophy is United’s only hope of securing European football next season, as the victors earn an automatic place in next campaign’s Champions League competition.
United’s latest injury news
In the last two weeks, United have been hit with a whole spat of injury issues, with Amorim only being able to name seven players on his bench against Fulham on the weekend, including two Academy goalkeepers, Chido Obi, and 18-year-old Ayden Heaven.
Heaven came on to make his debut for the club in the 30 minutes of extra time, replacing Harry Maguire, who seemed to exit the pitch due to an injury. Maguire has played 90 minutes across his last six games for the club.
Amorim was asked about Maguire after the game, to which he replied: “We’ll see. We’ll see. I have to see how is Harry Maguire. We will see. It’s a tough moment in that aspect, but we have to move on. It will be a competitive team on Thursday.”
Meanwhile, United have also been dealt a fresh update on Amad. The star forward, who is out for the rest of the season, was spotted at Old Trafford on Sunday wearing a protective boot and on crutches as he continues to recover from a serious ankle issue.
Lisandro Martínez is another player who will miss the season after tearing his ACL against Crysyal Palace last month, although he may not return until November 2025.
Toby Collyer is hoped to return to the squad in the next few weeks, while Mason Mount and Kobbie Mainoo may not play for United again until next month, with their exact return dates unspecified.
Amorim has been without Luke Shaw for his entire tenure at Old Trafford, bar three matchday squads in November and December, and is thought to be behind Mount in his recovery despite being spotted in training a few weeks ago.
Jonny Evans has been out of action for a while, having not played since scoring against Tottenham in mid-December, and there is little in the way of news on third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton.
Altay Bayındır has been working hard behind the scenes on his recovery, and many are hoping the Turkish international and second-choice goalkeeper can return soon following a string of poor performances from André Onana.
