Manchester United’s stance on a Raheem Sterling transfer has been revealed amid a problem concerning Jadon Sancho’s future.

Jadon Sancho, 24, was absent from Manchester United for the latter half of last season due to a dispute with manager Erik ten Hag, who left him out of the team for a match against Arsenal.

Sancho has not featured in the Premier League for United since last August, a situation Ten Hag attributed to unsatisfactory training performances. Sancho disputed these claims publicly, which led to his temporary exclusion from the team and a six-month loan spell back at Borussia Dortmund.

After reconciling with Ten Hag during pre-season through an extensive discussion, Sancho rejoined United’s first-team training. However, despite initial thoughts of his retention, Sancho has been linked with a transfer away from Old Trafford in recent days.

Sancho did not participate in United’s first two Premier League matches of 2024/25 against Fulham and Brighton, and it appears that United is planning to transfer him.

Many outlets have touted the possibility of Sancho swapping Red for London Blue and signing for his boyhood club, Chelsea, with outcast winger Raheem Sterling heading the other way.

However, according to the Manchester Evening News, United are “wary” of signing Sterling this summer despite the winger’s interest in a move to Old Trafford.

Although Sterling is said to be open to the move, the article explains that United stress they will only complete deals which would aid their profit and sustainability calculations for next year.

This means that, as Sancho swapping with Sterling would mean United would receive a nominal or even no fee, they would not be able to record Sancho’s sale as an influx of cash, which is a problem.

United are demanding £40 million for the player, and Juventus seems to be the most likely destination for the 24-year-old winger.

The Serie A side are in talks to sell Italian forward Federico Chiesa to Liverpool in the coming days. This would free up funds to sign Sancho and create a space in their squad.

However, a snag that would need to be filled is Sancho would likely need to lower his wage demands. He has been sat on £300k a week at Old Trafford, likely more than the Turin giants can afford.
