Manchester United have reportedly now reached a basic agreement on personal terms with Patrick Dorgu ahead of a potential January transfer.

Manchester United are looking to strike a deal with Serie A side Lecce in the next two weeks for the permanent transfer of 20-year-old Patrick Dorgu to aid Rúben Amorim at left wing-back.

United’s struggles at the back, particularly their inability to defend set pieces, have been a recurring issue under Amorim. Strengthening the left-back position has been identified as a critical area for improvement.

Luke Shaw, United’s long-time first-choice left-back, has faced persistent injury problems ever since his devastating double leg fracture in a Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven in 2015.

Tyrell Malacia, Shaw’s understudy, has also endured a difficult spell, recently returning from a gruelling 17-month recovery following multiple surgeries on a serious knee injury.

In their absence, Diogo Dalot has been used at left-back, though Amorim has admitted that Dalot is far more comfortable playing in his natural role on the right side of the defence.

United reach basic personal terms agreement with Dorgu

According to a new report from Corriere dello Sport via PianetaLecce, Dorgu’s representatives have reached a “basic agreement” with United over his move to Old Trafford, meaning personal terms will not be an issue.

The young star currently earns around £10,000 a week at the Serie A side, but it’s expected that this will increase dramatically if he secures a Premier League move, with the player said to have a “perfect blend” of technical ability and defensive acumen.

However, there are still problems that need to be solved in order for United to get the transfer over the line, with Lecce demanding around £34 million for the player.

According to the report, United submitted a bid of just under £30 million including add-ons, but the side scrapping in the relegation zone in Italy rejected the offer.

Further, they have reportedly requested that should United sign the player this month, he head back on loan to Lecce for the remainder of the campaign before rejoining his new club in the summer.

United also consdiering alternative options

While Dorgu seems like the club’s favourite option for the January window, they are also remaining open to other transfers.

According to Fabrizio Romano, United are also still considering re-signing former Academy player Alvaro Fernandez, with the club able to do so for just £17 million thanks to a buy-back clause inserted into his transfer to Benfica.

Fernandez has been on fire for the Portuguese side this campaign and shone in their Champions League clash against Barcelona, assisting his team’s first goal within two minutes with a lovely low cross.

However, Benfica ultimately collapsed and lost the tie 5-4 despite holding a 4-1 lead, although many feel that they were harshly treated by the refree on the night.
