Manchester United have seemingly made their final decision on Mason Greenwood after Sir Jim Ratcliffe said they would make a “fresh decision”.

Greenwood, 22, is on loan at La Liga club Getafe after it was confirmed that he would not recommence his career at Manchester United last summer.

The criminal charges against Greenwood’s name were dropped in February 2023 following the withdrawal of key witnesses, but fan outcry forced Richard Arnold to perform a U-Turn after he had originally planned to reintroduce the forward to Erik ten Hag’s squad.

With ten goals and six assists this season, Greenwood has attracted potential suitors for a summer transfer, such as Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, as well as the option of representing Jamaica internationally.

Although earlier this season, it was thought that Greenwood’s sale was a certainty for the 2024 summer transfer window, this was brought into doubt once Sir Jim Ratcliffe bought 27.7% of the club.

What Ratcliffe said

During a long series of interviews earlier this year, Ratcliffe fielded a whole number of questions and was adamant that “no topics were off limits” – so naturally, the future of Greenwood came to light.

“It’s a fresh decision,” Ratcliffe said about the future of Greenwood. “I can talk about the principle. I am not going to talk about Mason. I am familiar with it. The principle is the important one. We will have other issues going forwards.

“You are dealing with young people who have not always been brought up in the best circumstances, who have a lot of money and they don’t always have the guidance they should have.

“What we need to do when we have issues like that is understand real effects, not the hype. Then, we need to make a fair decision in the light of the club’s values. That’s what we need to do, and that’s how we will deal with it.”

Decision made

Despite Ratcliffe hinting that a different decision may be taken, Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that Greenwood will be sold this summer and that the “situation hasn’t changed” surrounding the transfer in 2024.

“I already reported that Man United are prepared to cash in on Mason Greenwood and the situation hasn’t changed,” Romano said to CaughtOffside.

“Man United will wait for permanent transfer proposals because the priority is a sale in order to make profit for Financial Fair Play, although Getafe still hope to keep him on loan.”
