Manchester United are set to battle intra-city rivals Man City in a bid to secure the signature of Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong.

Frimpong, 23, will have a £35m release clause available to be activated this summer, with the clause a ‘one-off’ for only this upcoming summer window.

An integral part of Leverkusen’s Bundesliga title-chasing side, Frimpong has missed just two league matches for the German side this season.

Starring as both a wing-back and on occasion in midfield, Frimpong has solidified himself as one of the stars of the Bundesliga.

Now, with Manchester United’s upcoming planned summer exodus, it is believed Erik ten Hag’s side have identified Frimpong as an ideal recruit.

In the latest report from The Sun, it was revealed that United’s hierarchy sees Frimpong as the “perfect profile in terms of age and asking price.”

However, if United are to pursue their interest, they will face competition from City, with key figures in the sky-blue side of Manchester seeing Frimpong as a long-term replacement for Kyle Walker.

Frimpong was a part of City’s youth setup from the age of nine, leaving in 2019 to sign for Celtic at the age of eighteen. This means Frimpong would qualify as a homegrown player for City, something that those at the Etihad see as particularly appealing.

With eleven goals and eleven assists this season, Frimpong has contributed more goals than anyone at United.

Frimpong has more assists than any individual in the Red Devils’ squad, with only Rasmus Hojlund (13) having scored more goals than the Dutchman this campaign.
