With the summer transfer window now beginning to approach further, Manchester United have reportedly set their sights on two Premier League midfielders.
The announcement of Casemiro’s departure in January only further confirms Manchester United’s need for midfield reinforcements this coming transfer window.
The reintegration of Kobbie Mainoo back into the starting eleven under Michael Carrick has made this task slightly easier now, following an unexplainable amount of time on the sidelines under now former manager Ruben Amorim.
However, United will have to look at more than just one midfield partner for the Englishman, with other players such as Manuel Urgarte looking as though they could leave, and the potential of competing in Europe once again next season will require the Reds to strengthen the squad further.
United to target Guimarães and Tonali
According to reports from sportwitness, United are looking at Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali as potential midfield options this summer.
‘Informal contacts are said to have been made, with Manchester United contacting the entourage of both Magpies players,’ the report stated.
With the Magpies showing struggles in the League this year, dropping down to 13th, with the prospect of European football appearing more and more unlikely, the pair could become a market opportunity United should go all out for.
With both respectfully being widely considered as one of the best in their positions in Europe, the addition of either into this current United squad would instantly raise the levels of the team as well as potential aspirations for the coming season.

How likely would a potential move be?
As previously mentioned, United’s battle to return to the Champions League for the first time since 2023, as well as Newcastles now uphill battle to make it into Europe next season, will play a major role in any potential move for the pair, with reports from sportwitness echoing this.
‘Manchester United’s own participation in the competition will also be important, although their finances aren’t as dependent on that as Newcastle’s are.’
However, their does remain doubts over whether Newcastle would be willing to let either of the pair go to another Premier League rival, with the club likely to command a hefty fee not far off the figures paid for other talent in recent years, such as Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo.
‘Newcastle United would be reluctant to sell either, especially to a Premier League rival in the summer. Much will depend on whether the Magpies qualify for the Champions League, and their subsequent financial situation.’
With United also being heavily linked to other major Premier League talent such as Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba of Brighton, it is yet to be seen if the club would be willing to pivot from these long-term targets if an opportunity to snatch Guimarães or Tonali were to arise.
