Manchester United could be receiving up to £56 million from Barcelona this summer as Hansi Flick sends his scouts on a mission in France.
Manchester United has decided to sell academy assets turned top-level talents in recent years, Angel Gomes, Alvaro Fernandez, and James Garner, to name a few. This list continues to grow.
This summer, Marcus Rashford departed the club on loan to Barcelona, with an option to buy for around £26 million at the end of the deal.
Reports suggest that Barcelona is in the market for another attacker, in case the Rashford deal falls through, or to add to their already bolstered attack.
Ruben Amorim and the United board will be anticipating a big payout for the move of another former Red, if Barcelona is willing to pay the hefty fee for one of Ligue 1’s top talents.
Barcelona in for Greenwood
24-year-old Mason Greenwood departed the Reds permanently after a lengthy period of personal troubles last year, after three years of being out of reckoning during his time in Manchester.
Greenwood revitalised his career on loan at Getafe, scoring eight goals and recording six assists in 33 appearances for the Spanish side.
The former Red then made the permanent move to the South of France, impressing for Marseille for over a year and making the headlines when he scored four goals in a 6-2 thriller against Le Havre.
TBRFootball has reported that Barcelona sent scouts to watch Greenwood on Saturday. In a game where he most certainly caught the eye of the Culers’ recruitment team, he put in a “perfect” display by scoring four goals across the 90 minutes.
All factors point to a return to Spain for Greenwood in the near future, as 37-year-old Robert Lewandowski starts to slow down, and there is a possibility that Rashford’s deal may not become permanent.
Greenwood deal means huge payout for United
As mentioned earlier, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the rest of the United board will be eagerly awaiting a potential move, as the Reds have a 50% sell-on clause included in Greenwood’s departure.
This would mean the Reds could reinvest in a midfielder, a targeted position the club sought in the summer.
It’s been previously reported that Marseille value the forward at least £60 million, so if Barcelona choose to trigger Rashford’s £26 million buy-option alongside signing Greenwood, United could recieve as much as £56 million for the pair next summer.
After being priced out of a move for Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton, depending on the fee, Barcelona and Marseille could theoretically agree on, the Reds could reignite their interest in these old targets.
If the deal is sealed, Barcelona fans will anticipate a good start for Greenwood, as he joins the ranks of Dani Olmo and Lamine Yamal.
