Manchester United are reportedly following Brazilian goalkeeper John Victor as potential competition for Rúben Amorim’s goalkeeper André Onana.

Manchester United’s plans for the 2025 transfer window are beginning to take shape as Rúben Amorim continues to evaluate his squad at Old Trafford.

The 39-year-old coach has now taken charge of six matches, recording his first win against Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League and following it up with another victory over FC Plzen.

In the Premier League, United showcased their potential with a 4-0 demolition of Everton but have struggled for consistency, suffering defeats to Arsenal and Nottingham Forest while drawing with Ipswich Town.

Looking ahead to 2025, there is a growing acknowledgment that United may need to part ways with some of their star players to raise the funds required for new additions and to reshape the team in line with Amorim’s vision.

Potential Onana competition

According to journalist Alan Nixon, United are eyeing Botafogo’s 28-year-old goalkeeper John Victor as fresh competition for André Onana.

Onana has been criticised after two poor performances against Nottingham Forest and FC Plzen, where errors led to goals conceded in both ties.

With Altay Bayındır likely to leave Old Trafford in the coming months as many at the club feel he is too good to remain a second choice, they are hunting for a replacement.

Also, third choice Tom Heaton’s contract is set to expire in June 2025 after he signed a one-year extension in the summer, with little to suggest that he will continue at the club beyond the end of this season.

Who is John Victor?

Victor, who was described as a “sensation” by Nixon in his report, helped Botafogo in securing their Brazilian league title and their recent Copa Libertadores triumph.

He was recently voted as the best player in Brazil, and has been making waves across South American football for his fantastic displays in goal.

It is thought that he is destined to follow in the footsteps of Alisson Becker and Ederson, goalkeepers of Liverpool and Manchester City, respectively, as he continues into the peak years of his career.

With Heaton and Bayındır likely to depart in the coming months, Amorim will no doubt want a trustworthy pair of hands to play as back up to Onana.
