Manchester United’s January budget figure revealed following Rúben Amorim’s transfer admission
Manchester United’s 2025 January transfer window budget has been revealed following Rúben Amorim’s comments about the winter window.
Manchester United are entering a phase of calculated spending under Rúben Amorim, a stark contrast to the extravagant transfer strategy adopted during Erik ten Hag’s tenure.
Over the course of five transfer windows, Ten Hag oversaw spending exceeding £600 million, a bold investment many feel has not yielded the transformative results expected on the pitch.
Under Amorim, the focus is clear: the squad needs a reliable striker, a solid centre-back, a dependable left-back, and possibly further midfield reinforcements. These are pressing needs for a team aiming to recalibrate both their ambitions and their balance sheet.
To achieve this, the club are preparing to part ways with some of their high-value assets, adopting a more thoughtful and resourceful approach to squad building—one that prioritizes efficiency without compromising on quality.
This shift not only reflects financial prudence but also hints at an evolution in United’s strategy as they strive to restore their competitive edge.
United’s January transfer budget revealed
While some fans hope United will reinforce their squad in January, the Manchester Evening News has brought bad news on the transfer incomings front.
The report, published on on Tuesday morning, has revealed that United’s figure for the January window is £0 – there is “no budget” to make any signings next month.
It is said that club sources have stressed that, for any purchases to be made, the club must look to offload their assets to buy further reinforcements, with further claiming United “can’t do anything” until movement in their current squad is made.
However, in positive news, it’s also added that United are prepared to move for new players should funding arrive, despite the fact that there is no current replacement for recently departed sporting director Dan Ashworth.
What Amorim said about the January transfer window
Following United’s 2-0 defeat against Newcastle United, head coach Amorim was asked if he feels his club must reinvest in the squad to help dig them out of their current slump.
In reply, the 39-year-old said: “We don’t have that possibility in January if we don’t take [sell] some players.
“So you know the situation better than I am. So it’s not the case that I am arriving here and I can spend a lot of money changing all the team. You know the situation, so it’s not a point to talk about it.”
United are thought to be working on a transfer for Marcus Rashford, while Antony, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, and Victor Lindelöf are all free to leave if the right offer arrives.
