After being strongly linked with a move away from Manchester United, a club insider has shed light on who Rúben Amorim would want to replace the winger this summer.
Alejandro Garnacho’s season so far has been one of inconsistency. After failing to provide a goal or an assist in the Premier League between December and March, the Argentinian has picked up some form as of late, scoring against Newcastle and Brentford of late.
With Manchester United needing to sell-to-buy this summer, the 20-year-old is one of the players that finds himself on the list of possible departures going into the summer transfer window.
Garnacho was heavily linked with a move to Napoli in January, who are still needing to replace their former Georgian star, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
With United seemingly resigning themselves to the fact that their Argentine star will be playing his football elsewhere this season, a rival Premier League club could be set to swoop in for Garnacho.
Chelsea plotting a move for Garnacho
According to United’s former chief scout, Chelsea are the current front-runners to sign the winger in the summer after showing significant interest in January.
Speaking to Football Insider, Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at United, has said that Chelsea remain very keen on signing the 20-year-old in the summer.
The former scout, who has extensive experience in top-level player recruitment, insisted Chelsea’s interest remains despite some doubts, saying, “Chelsea’s interest hasn’t gone away.”
“They wanted him in January, and they’re still looking to sign a new winger. Chelsea have the foundations of a top-class team, and they’re still looking to improve in key areas.
“The winger will be wanting assurances of playtime, something Chelsea may not be able to offer with the depth of their current squad.
“The problem is, you don’t know if Garnacho would come in and be a regular in that team, because they’ve got so many options out wide. He will want to play regularly – but look at what’s happened to Jadon Sancho there.”
Further, Brown’s report stated that if Garnacho leaves Old Trafford this summer, the club would ideally want to bring in Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo as his replacement.
United are making a mistake if they let Garnacho go
In January, Ruben Amorim made it clear that he wanted Garnacho to remain at Old Trafford for the long term, openly clashing with INEOS over the club’s stance on the player’s future.
With a significant number of departures expected at United this summer, Garnacho could prove to be a major loss if Chelsea or Napoli meet the club’s £50 million valuation.
Despite facing criticism for occasional selfishness and a lack of end product, it’s important to remember that Garnacho is still only 20 years old. At this age, he has already contributed to more goals for United than Cristiano Ronaldo had, highlighting the immense potential at stake.
If Garnacho does leave, it would certainly ease United’s financial flexibility in the transfer market. Still, it raises the difficult question: is it worth parting with such a promising talent?
Should a deal go through, United must push to include a buy-back clause, ensuring they can re-sign him if he reaches the star potential many believe he holds.
