Manchester United have confirmed Luke Shaw’s current injury status following a slightly confusing comment from Rúben Amorim ahead of the Manchester City clash.

Rúben Amorim is preparing Manchester United for a vital Premier League clash against Manchester City, a major challenge in the early stages of his tenure.

United enter the match on the back of a 2-1 comeback win over FC Viktoria Plzeň in the Europa League, with substitute Rasmus Højlund delivering both goals to secure victory. With the festive domestic schedule now underway, attention turns to a high-stakes encounter.

Manchester City are struggling for form, with just one win in their last ten matches across all competitions. Earlier this season, Pep Guardiola’s side suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Amorim’s Sporting, a result that underlined their vulnerabilities.

With City’s hopes of a fifth consecutive Premier League title fading, United will aim to compound their misery and climb up from 13th place when the two sides meet at the Etihad Stadium.

United’s Shaw confirmation

Ahead of the Manchester derby, Rúben Amorim was asked if his side had any knocks from the midweek game to worry about, to which he said he expected to have a full squad available against City.

“I don’t think so,” he replied. “It was five minutes ago, so I have to see it. But no, just some players were tired in the end, you could see it, also because of the transitions, it was a crazy game in the end today.

“But I think everyone is going to be fit and ready to win the game. [Jonny?] Yeah, he’s training already.”

This confused some fans, as it had been stated in the week prior that Luke Shaw had suffered a set back. Amorim’s claim led some to speculate that the English defender may have returned sooner than expected.

However, United have since clarified the situation, explaining on their club website that Shaw remains sidelined, but Amorim has a clean bill of health aside from the 29-year-old.

Man City in trouble

Meanwhile, Manchester City are not fairing as well as Guardiola has to deal with five first-team injuries.

In their 2-0 defeat to Juventus earlier this week, the Spaniard had five players unavailable, with none likely to return in time for the weekend.

Centre-back John Stones remains sidelined with a muscle injury and is expected back later this month, while defensive partner Manuel Akanji is also out with a knock.

Nathan Aké is nursing a hamstring injury, and Oscar Bobb is recovering from a leg fracture, with both ruled out until mid-January. Meanwhile, midfielder Rodri is set to miss the remainder of the season after suffering a cruciate ligament injury in September.
