Eight Manchester United first-team players have missed the travelling squad to face Fenerbahce, as Erik ten Hag and his team fly to Istanbul.

Manchester United are set to continue their Europa League campaign on Thursday evening with an away fixture against Fenerbahce in the third round of group stage matches.

United’s performance in the competition has been underwhelming so far, with two draws against FC Twente and FC Porto sparking widespread criticism of manager Erik ten Hag.

Despite their struggles in Europe, United returned to Premier League action last weekend with a spirited second-half comeback to defeat Brentford at Old Trafford.

Thursday’s clash also marks a reunion with former United manager Jose Mourinho, now at the helm of Fenerbahce. The Turkish side also feature familiar faces in Fred and Sofyan Amrabat, both of whom previously played under Ten Hag at Manchester United.

Eight miss out

Eight members of United’s first-team squad did not take a flight to Istanbul, five of whom were defenders.

Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia remain unavailable for selection due to injury. However, the former was spotted training on an individual programme on Wednesday morning. as he recovers from a leg issue.

Leny Yoro also continues to be sidelined, although he started training on grass for the first time since July earlier this week and is expected back in action in December.

Harry Maguire is another known absentee following a calf injury against Aston Villa. However, another surprise on Wednesday morning was that Jonny Evans missed training and was not included on the flight to Turkey.

A further three players miss out in midfield. Kobbie Mainoo has been ruled out until mid-November with a hamstring problem, while Mason Mount continues to be unavailable after he was forced off against Tottenham late last month.

Meanwhile, club captain Bruno Fernandes is suspended due to a red card he received against FC Porto earlier this month.

In more positive news, it seems that Matthijs de Ligt is fine after receiving a head wound against Bretnford, while Casemiro is in training after being forced off at Old Trafford on the weekend.

Youngsters Harry Amass and Habeeb Ogunneye have both joined the group for the fixture and may be afforded their debuts for the club should Ten Hag call upon them to action.
