Man Utd identify new midfield target for Ruben Amorim rebuild, INEOS in “little doubt” of 24-year-old

Manchester United have reportedly spotted a new profile to add to Ruben Amorim’s midfield as the Reds begin to find form again, with Ineos in “little doubt” about his talent.

Ruben Amorim has not had a smooth journey so far as Manchester United boss, with the team finding difficulty in gelling into his new system of two central midfielders.

With eight Premier League games played already this season, United have looked vulnerable in the centre of the pitch due to a lack of athleticism to break up play and regain possession. Poor quality and a misuse of profiles have forced United to be outrun, especially in the late stages of games.

But Ineos have reportedly found the potential solution to the issue, a player who can fill the boots of an ageing Casemiro, who has yet to play a full 90 minutes under Amorim this season, and reckless Ugarte, despite the Uruguayan only arriving in August 2024.

Kobbie Mainoo has also struggled for game time this season, with his general profile not being suited to the role that Amorim desires. Toby Collyer has found himself out on loan at West Brom this season, securing consistent minutes in the Championship, but this leaves a hole in United’s midfield.

United pick out Kone as the glue to the midfield worries

Transfer journalist Graeme Bailey has revealed that one key name INEOS have landed on as a possible midfield signing is Roma’s Manu Koné, and that they are in “little doubt” about the 24-year-old’s talent.

The Frenchman has featured heavily for Gian Piero Gasperini this season, playing every minute in the Serie A so far alongside Bryan Cristante. Kone has been an aggressive ball winner in Italy, using his athleticism to read opposition and put his side on the front foot.

Other potential midfield options have included Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, who has shone in the Premier League under Oliver Glasner with his composure on the ball and exceptional passing ability.

However, Kone suits the build of a modern defensive midfielder with his tall frame and raw power, similar to the likes of Ryan Gravenberch and Carlos Baleba.

This potential signing would likely replace Casemiro, who, despite impressing multiple times this season and last, is struggling to see games through under Amorim. He is required to cover a lot of ground, often resulting in conceding many fouls.

The veteran has already received three yellow cards this season and one red card against Chelsea.

Kone more financially suitable to United

Kone has been playing in a similar 3-4-3 system under Gasperini, so his introduction to Amorim’s side should be a smooth process. However, some believe he could still be too raw for the Premier League, so it may take some time to adjust to the intensity and quality standards.

Graeme Bailey, speaking to UnitedInFocus, said, “United are busy assessing and putting together their plans for 2026, and midfield is an area we know is somewhere they have major plans for.”

He also revealed another potential profile for United’s midfield. He stated, “Angelo Stiller and Manu Kone are two players that United are already well versed on, they like them both and are keeping close tabs on them. They are both huge talents and there are little doubts that they would be good fits.”

The midfielder would likely cost no more than £50 million, which is much more affordable for United after seeing the high price tag for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba in the summer.

United have a history of spending big on players who have not proceeded to hit the expected highs, so Kone would have less pressure on his shoulders if he were to come to Old Trafford in 2026.
