Manchester United ‘held talks’ with a high-flying, £75million Premier League superstar, before his contract renewal over the summer.
During the summer transfer window, Manchester United heavily prioritised their attacking department, bringing in three new forwards for a total of around £200 million.
This included the acquisitions of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Šeško, who have made up a new-look attacking trio for Ruben Amorim’s side.
Despite their expenditure over the summer, the Reds are still the biggest xG under-performers across the Premier League, with 14.1 expected goals, and only nine goals.
On this topic, the Reds reportedly held talks with one of the top-flight’s most in-form attackers over the summer, who has already scored six goals at the start of the new season.
United held talks for Semenyo
According to reports from TalkSPORT, United were one of a few sides who held talks for the 25-year-old Ghanaian Antoine Semenyo, alongside Tottenham Hotspur.
Bournemouth’s star attacker ended up signing a five-year deal at the Cherries, and has since hit an unbelievable run of form, with nine goal contributions in the first seven league fixtures.
The Cherries included a release clause in this contract, although the exact terms of this are being kept under wraps as Bournemouth aim to keep hold of their in-form winger.
The report also states that Andoni Iraola’s side values their star forward at over £75million, with interest in his signature growing significantly.
United’s attacking arsenal
Despite the trio struggling to get off the mark on a goal-scoring front, they seem to be getting close to their stride now, with new striker Šeško scoring two in his last two.
With all of the trio putting in impressive performances for the side, it feels like only a matter of time until the goals start to flow more frequently.
This being said, if the opportunity arises, bringing in a clinical winger such as Semenyo may be a hard offer to refuse, especially if he is to carry on his red-hot form.
It feels as if United may have other positions to prioritise in the upcoming windows before they revert their attention towards their forward line again, but if any attacker is to be worth stalling this for, it could be Semenyo.
