Manchester United star Harry Maguire has revealed that the club have produced a U-turn on his future after Rúben Amorim described his system as “perfect” for the player.

Harry Maguire was able to play 90 minutes for the first time since September as Rúben Amorim‘s men defeated Manchester City in a thrilling Premier League encounter on the weekend.

City struck first as Joško Gvardiol rose highest to nod home a powerful header, but United responded in style during a pulsating second half.

Amad sparked the fightback, pouncing on a sloppy pass from Matheus Nunes and cleverly shielding the ball to win a penalty. Bruno Fernandes stepped up and calmly dispatched the spot-kick, leveling the score with just minutes left on the clock.

When it seemed the match would end in a draw, Lisandro Martínez produced a moment of magic, threading an exquisite pass to release Amad. The Ivorian showed ice-cold composure, lifting the ball delicately over Ederson before squeezing his finish home from a tight angle to seal a stunning victory for Rúben Amorim’s side.

United’s transfer U-turn

Maguire is a man who has been subject to a lot of speculation of late, with the club reportedly willing to cash in on the 31-year-old in the 2024 summer transfer window, with his current contract set to expire in June 2025.

However, in a recent interview, Maguire has now revealed that although this may have been the case this summer, there are now talks surrounding a new contract, showing a U-turn from the club.

“I haven’t really thought about it. I’ve still got this year to go with an option in their hands,” said the defender when asked about his future at United.

“But all the signs are positive at the moment, and the chat that I’m having is really positive.”

What Amorim thinks about Maguire

Following Maguire’s performance against City, where he helped lock down deadly striker Erling Haaland, Amorim explained that he thinks his system is “perfect” for Maguire.

“Maguire is perfect when you play with the three defenders,” said the 39-year-old.

“I think in the middle [he] is perfect. Then the way that the striker that they have [Haaland] with the long balls, you need to be really strong and so was perfect for him. Not just Harry, all the guys, defend really well.

“They were really focused and that is the key to play better. I think he did a great job and also his team-mates did a great job.”
