Manchester United are reportedly dreaming of signing a star who has been dubbed the ‘assist king’ of the Serie A to replace Luke Shaw.
While Manchester United spent a large portion of cash completely revitalising their attacking line last summer, many expect the focus going forward to be on their midfield and defensive ranks.
The Old Trafford outfit have a number of ageing players across their midfield and defensive lines, with the futures of Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw in question, while it’s already been confirmed that Casemiro will depart at the end of the current campaign.
Shaw’s left-back position is a very interesting one. Despite years of fitness problems, the 30-year-old has started every single one of United’s Premier League fixtures this term, and has been a standout player under Michael Carrick in the last month or so.
But, with his contract set to expire at the end of next season, some have put forward the idea that the club should cash in on Shaw and find a replacement.
United ‘dreaming’ of signing Dimarco
Amid the possibility of signing a new left-back in the summer, TuttoSport have repoted in their Tuesday edition that United have been ‘dreaming’ about signing Inter Milan star Federico Dimarco.
The 28-year-old has had a stellar season so far in the Serie A and has been widely dubbed as an ‘assist king’ in Italy, having racked up 13 already in the league, also adding a further five goals across all competitions.
TuttoSport notes that the Italian has improved significantly physically over the last 12 months and has upgraded his defensive skill set, making him an ideal player to transfer from the Premier League.
This comes not too long after Arsenal were also linked with a move for the left-back this summer due to his stellar form.
Dimarco could be perfect for Cunha
With United changing from a 3-4-2-1 under Rúben Amorim to a more classic 4-2-3-1 under Carrick, there were many questions about how Matheus Cunha could adapt from a wide-attacking midfielder to a left-winger.
Fortunately, Carrick has found the solution. While Amad stays wide and Bryan Mbeumo holds width up front, Cunha and Bruno Fernandes have often had the license to roam freely between the lines and across the pitch, causing chaos in midfield.

But what this has meant is that Shaw has had to step up high and wide on the left flank, giving him a lot of attacking responsibility.
If Dimarco were to join United and his final ball were to remain as high quality as it has been this season, he could be the perfect left-back to pair with Cunha. The Brazilian would be free to roam across the pitch while knowing the left flank will not miss out on production.
Dimarco, being 28, would also be a great competitor with Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, who many feel could be the ultimate heir to Shaw, for the left-back position.
