The transfer fee of Rúben Amorim’s first signing as Manchester United’s head coach has been confirmed amid an influx of Academy talent.

Although Rúben Amorim is looking to add first-team reinforcements to his Manchester United squad, the club has also been focused on bringing in Academy talent that will be able to benefit his team in the coming years.

The summer 2024 transfer window saw the club strike deals for both Chido Obi-Martin and Sekou Kone, two young players who have been widely regarded as top-tier talents within academy circles.

At a time period when the club need to strike low-money deals that do not harm their profit and sustainability position, signing young players into the Academy and raising their profile and status as a first-team player in the years to come is a sensible decision.

There is hope that many of the players brought in are regarded as ones to watch for the coming seasons as they slowly embed themselves into Amorim’s squad.

First Amorim signing fee confirmed

Another young talent the club have secured is young Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon, who will join United from Cerro Porteno and is set to become the first significant signing under Amorim.

Leon is not 18, meaning he cannot join United until his birthday in April, but over the weekend, he flew to Manchester to undergo his medical sign a four-year contract that will become active once he joins in April.

According to The Athletic, it has now been confirmed by Leon’s current club that United’s agreement with them sits at a total fee of around £6 million.

This is broken down into an initial £3.3 million with a further £2.7 million in add-ons, and for these additions to be fully realised, Leon will have to perform very well at the club over time.

What United will do next with Leon

Just like Obi-Martin and Kone, Leon has been signed with a view of initially settling into Manchester United through the Academy before making an impact in first-team football.

However, their impact is thought to be coming sooner rather than later, although individual decisions are being taken depending on each players’ situation.

In pre-season, an assessment will be made about Leon’s suitability for Amorim’s first-team squad, or whether he would be better suited to staying in the Academy or going on loan for first-team experience.

The same is expected to happen to each of United’s new Academy recruits, and should they be deemed ready for first-team action, they could help save the club millions in transfer fees for the future.
