Manchester United could be owed hundreds of millions of pounds if Manchester City are found guilty of breaches of Premier League financial rules.

Manchester United have spent the last decade watching in the shadows as Manchester City has completely usurped them as the greatest team in the Premier League and possibly in Europe.

While United have won five competitive trophies since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, Man City have claimed 18, including seven Premer League titles and the converted Champions League trophy in 2022.

Most of the club’s success has come under the guise of Pep Guardiola, while United have barrelled through several managers, including Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, and Erik ten Hag, across the last decade.

However, Man City are now in serious trouble with 115 separate charges pending against them relating to alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules.

How Man United can benefit

According to The Times, Manchester United have lodged legal notices reserving their right to compensation should Man City be found guilty of the more serious charges relating to the 115 pending against them.

United reportedly did this alongside Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, and Arsenal, which, according to the report, “took the step of formally registering possible compensation claims via arbitration before a potential statute of limitations deadline last week.”

The timing of this notice was determined by lawyers’ advice that there was a potential six-year statute of limitations from 5 November 2018, when German website Der Spiegel first published the now famous Football Leaks documents.

It is claimed that Chelsea did not do the same, and they have their own Premier League investigation pending after they self-reported alleged irregular payments while under Roman Abramovich’s ownership.

United may be owed ‘hundreds of millions’

The Times further clarified that what they can claim compensation for relates to losing out on revenue via winning tournaments or qualification for places in European competitions.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, United have finished second in the Premier League twice. They missed out on winning the 2023 FA Cup final against Manchester City, losing 2-1 at Wembley Stadium.

It is said that the compensation could reach hundreds of millions of pounds as the claims would be able to be made over the course of several seasons.
